Let's talk playlists
« on: September 20, 2012, 02:40:31 PM »
Ok so all of you use iHeart, Pandora, both, or something else. I like when I make a station I tell it yay or nay on songs and it filters the nays out and plays more like yay.

So on my computer my library is extensive, it's fucking huge. Making playlists is daunting and never works out ideally because it just takes so much time and thought. Is there any player, app, plugin etc that will do for me locally what iHeart and Pandora do? That way I can make a few playlists and be good to go.

iTunes' Genius works well for me, but I don't have a huge music library.

I figured you'd say that, but then again, Genius works pretty well for me.

I know a lot of people like it, but it has always been a few things for me:

- Sluggish (blame my library most likely)
- Intrusive (it always wants updates or something. It makes it's own folder and confuses me when i move or use my library in other ways. It complains about DRM crap. It tags my files.)
- Baggage (fuck quicktime)

I haven't used a local playlist in a very long time.  My playlists are on Pandora or YouTube.  I actually take stuff I really like that Pandora finds and turn it into an ultimate playlist on youtube.

I never use local playlists. The issue has become that the Windows player is GREAT, but it's shuffle capabilities are really shitty and you can't easily jump to a specific song. Like in Winamp you hit "J" then type in what you are looking for.

I never thought of that...duh.  Gonna try that soon.

OK so I'm playing with iTunes. It's ok so far, i'm not angry yet. The smart playlist is kind of weak but I'm not used to setting it up yet so I won't cast judgement yet.

I listen to iHeart Radio a lot. Can i save the stream links in iTunes as a playlist?

iTunes is much better than versions I previously used and it doesn't bug me for crap. I wish they would design it a bit more friendly for people that do not let iTunes manage the entire library because it makes a few things more difficult.

Oh and seriously they need an option to rebuild the library. That way if I delete music or add music I then can just hit "refresh" and have the entries updated because deleting all of my music and dumping it back in is annoying. I don't do it often but seriously, these days most players are automatic.

I've always wanted a Spanish "what" feature as well.

iTunes has shocked me by becoming my main player. I still manage the library myself but for playing and playlists iTunes does a good job. Once i learned i can stick it in the tray area even better.

It still really needs an option to refresh/update library
