a different take on
« on: August 04, 2012, 07:45:39 PM »
Shepherd's pie...made it with ground turkey and it was awesome. Made loaded mashed potatoes to cover the top of the pie (all though i didn't have any). Topped that off with angel cake covered in a sour cream/condensed milk cream with blueberries. I didn't have any of that either :(

But the fam loved it!

Sausage shepherd's pie? Do you buy brats or italian sausage and squeeze it out?

no? I use ground deer sausage. Every season my second or third deer goes to the butcher (I do all the others myself) to be turned into sausage. I don't know how they make it, it could be that they make the links/brats for the flavor and all that then uncase and ground it.

I love shepherd's pie with ground beef. I first tried a recipe that involved baking for a bit, with real mashed potatoes on top, but recently I realized it's hardly worth it since I like instant mashed potatoes almost as much and it takes way less time.

Called my butcher today, they make the sausage as normal and then smoke it for a few days. After being smoked it is ground (if ordered) casing and all into ground sausage.

Ahem.  let me summarize.

Steve:  I called a guy and paid him to smoke my sausage.

There's only one meat in SHEPHERDS pie, and the clue's in the name.

If you make it with beef it's cottage pie, and I have no idea what the other 2 abominations are.

Holy shit, you mean you grind up little boys that tend to sheep and put them in the pie? I guess their legs are tender from long days standing in the fields?
