My favorite explorer, Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Shackleton

He explored the Antarctic, and although he never made it to the south pole, his attempt to cross the continent is an incredible story. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend the book Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.

His family motto is particularly appropriate: "Fortitudine Vincimus" - By endurance we conquer

Just to keep things interesting on my island, and maybe to send this person to someone else's island I chose Jack the Ripper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_the_ripper

I haven't said it yet - Charlie i love the sig and th use of colors to clearly indicate where we are in the draft. I use it all the time!
govtcheez03:  i kind of look for it - i seek out stupidity and annoy it until it either gets better, gets banned, or goes away on its own

Oops, knew I was supposed to do something last night.  One of my favorite authors and just an interesting person in general, Ernest Hemingway:

And I'm a bit surprised this one hasn't been picked yet, but he would be fascinating to talk to for all of the obvious reasons including what Charlie mentioned about Jesus, but my next pick is Muhammad:

You've probably never heard of my next pic, but IMO one of the most influential goth/darkwave/etc individuals:

I'm just picking off of the wealthiest list in Wiki now... this draft is kind of boring.  :(

You have no imagination. :p

What about entertainers? John Cleese was a brilliant pick. Or athletes? Heck, pick one hot babe if you need to, rules be damned (although Queen Elizabeth I is taken).

I have some catching up to do here...

I've picked a few notables from Christian history (which is at the root of much of modern western civilization)  Along that theme...

Constantine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_I

Although the Roman empire was generally tolerant of most religions, nearly three centuries after Jesus, Christ's followers were still being persecuted.  Constantine, as emperor, embraced Christianity and  signed the Edict of Milan, declaring religious tolerance within the Roman empire.  The religion was then free to spread through the vast empire.
