Another laptop thread
« on: May 13, 2019, 10:24:11 PM »
Ok, I know I did this like 6-8 months ago but the requirements are different.  I got my wife an iPad Pro so she's all set.  This one is for the kids.  They are both in accelerated math and won't have their chromebooks over the summer (they turn them in at the end of the year).  Plus we've been thinking about getting them a gaming laptop for a while.

I'm leaning towards https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GV62-8RD-200-Performance-Steelseries/dp/B07D4ZML7M/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl1&tag=laptopunderbudget-20&linkId=71ded3182f5d00b2faf69387755be37e&language=en_US after researching for a few hours.  It has decent specs (I know it's not an SSD but I'm not buying a gaming laptop with a 256GB SSD which seems to be the baseline).

Thoughts?  Any better options?  It will probably be used to play Fortnite, Minecraft, maybe some of my other Steam games.  For anything hardcore, they can use my computer.  I want them to have something that will last a while and be able to play most reasonable games without falling over or overheating.

Solid buy.  If you get it clone the HDD onto an NVMe SSD and put the HDD in a drawer or something.

Also check out the Razer product at your local Best Buy.  Pretty amazing stuff.

Specs on the Razers look good but they're out of my price range for this.  Thanks for the suggestion.  Do most modern laptops have a connection for those NVMe chips?

Not all laptops are going to support NVMe. You need a PCI-e port. It's becoming more and more common but you should check before you buy.

True, however most gaming laptops do.  Be sure to check.  If not get a non-NVMe 512 to 1TB SSD.
