new couch
« on: January 28, 2007, 08:00:16 PM »
picked up a nice two and three seater couch set on the weekend.  it's a suede type fabric that's a charcol colour.  5 yr warranty.  i also got a new tv unit, handmade from pine.  should make my unit look a bit more presentable.

and yes i realise that i'm horribly boring if this is the only news in my life right now

Horribly boring means no general problems though, right?  I need to go do some furniture hunting myself, but I will probably be going the cheap and mismatching route.

Pretty much, well, y'know, I don't want to blow it, but things are under generally stable and going ok.  I don't know why that sounds so ominous, it's  in my nature not to build things up, just in case.  Eye on the prize and all that.

Having done that for six months, well, having had my flatmate do that for six months, I say that you should buy whatever looks and feels as good as you can reasonably afford.  Trust me, you have to like what you're sitting/sleeping in on otherwise it's just shit, really.  It sounds trivial, but it's what counts.

I have a futon and a chair from Ikea. I actually like the futon as a couch, it's so big and it's comfortable if you have enough pillows.

Funny you mention this. My wife and I have been couch and TV stand shopping lately. I don't really care that much what she chooses. She will give me options and I will say which I like and which I don't. Then she'll change her mind completely and I won't like any of her new choices at first because I will have already gotten in the mindset of the previous options.

Now that we are older and make a little more money than we spend, we are trying to buy furniture that matches and will last for several years. We've considered leather, but it looks a little too formal/elegant. We're not 50. My wife wants a light blue to match the dark brown furniture. I can see why it looks nice and is in style right now, but I can also see a light blue couch in 10 years being ridiculed like the orange couches from the 70's.

We've been accumulating IKEA furniture for a long time (sucks for the movers since the pressed wood is quite heavy). I can name (literally by name) a bunch of different furniture items. In fact, I will:

3 Lack tables
1 Hemnes dresser
1 Olander chair
1 Omar kitchen shelving unit
1 Komiker entertainment unit
1 Lamsvik (?) bookshelf
2 Non (?) floor lamps
1 mini-love seat (forget the name)
1 dining table ( " )
4 dining chairs ( " )
1 craft table ( " )
1 floor lamp ( " )
1 table lamp ( " )
3 hanging lights ( " )
Various drinking glasses, frames, shelves, shower liners, plants, etc.

It will be nice, but odd to have furniture that doesn't have a name.

Actually, this picture of POÄNG:

is extremely similar to Olander, which appears to no longer be made. Olander is a little taller and leaner, the back fabric has no vertical lines, and there are no little buttons on the bottom, but otherwise it is identical.

Yeah... no shame in owning the original.
