It's apparently well documented that the town of Nottingham (trans: Home of the Notts) was originally called Snottingham (Home of the Snotts).

The Normans apparently had difficulty pronouncing the letter S and decreed that the name of the town should be changed.

Similar measures however were fiercely resisted by the good people of Scunthorpe.
