CPU temps
« on: July 30, 2005, 04:42:26 PM »
So I know the P4s run pretty hot, but I'm wondering how hot is too hot?  I downloaded Intel's Desktop utility last nite to check up on the temps and stuff while my system is up and running.  According to that, I'm up in the 170F range when doing nothing but running Outlook and FAH.

Unloaded, it runs in the 135F range... but I'm just wondering if that is cool enough.  I haven't had any problems with overheating or anything, but I'm wondering if I should be looking into extra cooling?  I already have an awesome CPU heatsink/fan, and I have 120mm fans in the front and back of my case.

Is there anything easy I can do?

what is FAH?

I'd say don't worry about it if temperature is the only indicator. My athlon 1800 had a regular habit of setting off its alarm every so often, until went into the BIOS and turned it off myself. I still have it, and it works as well as it did then.

Maybe your system just isn't getting any air?

FAH - Folding @ Home - distributed computing project... you should join! http://folding.stanford.edu/  There is a thread I started in OD about the group we have through cprog.

I'm not sure why it wouldn't be getting air... it's not like I have much around it.  And it's in an air conditioned apartment.

Wow 170F?  You are reaching near the threshold for P4s.  More than likely you would need a better cooler, unless you've got an amazing cooler on it.  Under load my athlon xp 3000+ 64bit runs about 50ish C, I think its partly because the ambient temp in the room is fairly low all the time, however I think it has more to do with the fact that I have about 6 case fans (but its fairly quiet at that).  How many case fans do you have?  What kinda cooler? Is it the stock cooler?

I would recommend maybe another case exhaust/intake fan if possible.

Zalman aluminum/copper heatsink w/ 120mm fan... one of the best you can get.  And I have a 120mm fan in the front and back.  I've been doing some looking and I've found that my temps are not that far off for my processor, even with the heatsink I have.  I think I'm alright.

Hmm I'm always looking to be in the low end of the spectrum if I can be :).  I dunno I have heard of much hotter things out there, and I think many components seem to have much better thermal endurance than what they used to take.

I think the hottest component I heard of, that still functioned, was a 6800GT card running at around 95C or so, I think they said it was near or over boiling water.

That's my assumption... like I said, I haven't had any problems, I was just hoping to get some ideas on how to cool the bitch down even more.

I could have sworn I posted a reply in this thread already...

Pentium 4 Thermal Management

I decided to get a bigger case with more fans, but it really didn't help very much... (just a about 1-3 degrees C, case temps)
