Post by: Steve on August 31, 2012, 11:21:07 AM
Who is the go to for Antivirus protection these days? Been a long time since I had to care.

Microsoft Security Essentials and maybe Avast.

AVG

That used to be my answer but reviews turn me off now

Microsoft Security Essentials and maybe Avast.

MSE is integrated into 8

What do the reviews say?  I haven't had issues.  MSE missed something once and I found Avast to be annoying and a POS (also missed something).

Just that it has become unreliable in the last few years and tends to "flake out" more than others. I do recall disliking the last version I ran, but anyones guess as to which one that was.

I haven't used an antivirus program for like 2 years.

Just whatever default stuff Win7 has on it.

I think I'll let Win8 do it's thing and see if there are any issues.

Benny!  They all miss things.  No way any AV is going to catch everything.  That isn't even realistic.  C'mon.

I used AVG for years and found that it caused issues (years ago).  So I moved to ESET NOD32 (pay) stuck with that until I tested MSSE for a year or two on the wife's machine.  I have since switched and am very pleased.

Meaning none.

I might go back to MSSE.  AVG can be annoying and a resource hog sometimes.

That is still an issue eh?  Good to know.

I'm pretty sure AVG was screwing up my mom's computer majorly. Uninstalled for now and going with Windows Defender and hoping she doesn't click on any bad links.

Avast has been pretty solid for me.

I'm running MSE now.  We'll see how that goes.

I'm on the W8 setup and still no issues.

still running NOD at home.

A few days ago I bought a license for NOD and installed it for peace of mind, because the W8 security kept advising me to add an independant AV software. NOD and Windows 8 do not get along well. It caused a few lock ups, made it impossible to login using my pin (had to use password) and it was just a mess. I contacted NOD and asked for a partial refund. I did not ask for a full refund because Windows 8 is brand new but they offered to just do a full refund.

Might give Avast a try.

They don't have MSE ready for 8?

they probably do, I haven't looked. I thought it was on here, but the thing on here covers everything but antivirus.

Looking now they don't list 8 on the MSE site, just up to 7. I'm downloading the version for 7 (64 bit) to try because everything for 7 works fine.

EDIT:

MSE says I don't need it. But yet WD keeps advising me to install antivirus software....

Avast is working perfect and cleaned out some minor issues. Went ahead and purchased it.
