The Protector - Knuck, look inside
« on: April 15, 2017, 12:34:46 PM »
I got "The Protector" Package for my truck. This is the first time I've done it. Negotiated from $2300 for all four services to $700! shows you how much margin they have on that crap. Anyway, at first look, the outside is outstanding, and the biggest difference I can see right away is that dead bugs clean up with a wipe! I don't have to buy specialty products to get rid of those lil buggers.

Knuck, what are your thoughts in this? wsa it worth it?

And just to mention, there is a 7 year warranty - even cuts in the interior.
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Hard to say Jake.  Each plan is different and there are a fair number of variables making it impossible for me  to guess.  If this coating is supposed to last more than a year, I doubt that there are any such products on the market.  Even if the preparation was perfect, and that is rare, the best coating style rarely last more than a few months without care and upkeep.  I suspect that there is an program that needs to be attended to every so often to maintain your protective coatings.  Don't miss these dates, in that they can kill the warranty on the system.

If you want to keep it looking sharp and protected over time, find a quality detailer in your area and figure out what works best for you.  Aren't you near Chicago?  There have to be a number of quality detail shops in your area.  Check them out on a detailing forum like AutoGeek or Autopia.

This TST is a common competitor to what you have installed so should give you a rough overview...

We recently purchased a new-to-us vehicle and I detailed it this weekend.  I will probably get a few pics of it in here when time allows.  I finished the exterior last night short of a second coat of seal coating.  I still have the interior, seals, and tires to finish as time allows.  I can tell you it looks significantly better than it did after dealership detailing was finished.

Here are a few competing seal coat products.  Prices really vary and this is a relatively new class of product.

I used McKees 37 Paint Coating.  I like the ease of use, cost, and quantity of product.

The Kamikaze product line is pretty hot right now.  Just not what I needed for my vehicle.

Thoughts?

As far as markups go, my main side gig right now is managing the backend for a Vehicle Warranty company.  Most are marked up 100% minimum.  Often much much more.  They also sell GAP insurance, same thing, the markup to the dealer is hundreds of dollars.  Usually, this cost is just being rolled into a loan, so to the average customer who doesn't do out the math or thinks the warranty is worth the cost, it doesn't seem like a bad deal.
