PC cloning
« on: May 19, 2008, 10:15:55 PM »
My sister in law is planning to buy a new laptop to replace her current one which is 4 years old.  Apparently I'm the "techie" guy in the family so computer related questions default to me.

She want to copy all of her files (including, I'm sure, multiple gigs worth of mp3s) to the new computer.  The old one still works fine.  What is her best bet?

Should she buy some software for said purpose or is that a waste of money.  What about home networking / or direct ethernet connection?

I've never done such a thing - and if it were me, i'd just say "burn a few dozen data CDs" -- but I'm guessing thats not the best options.

Thanks for your thoughts!

cloning is bad and immoral!

Router, two cat 5 cables, and a good night's sleep

Don't bother with a router... go buy a crossover cable or a $20 hub.

I still have that crappy netgear wireless router that kept dropping its wireless connection... perhaps I could use that.  How would I hook something like that up

(its embarrassing to say, but I've never set up a LAN or directly connected two PCs)

I've never had much luck with crossover cables.  And who doesn't have a spare router these days?  hell can you even buy hubs easily anymore?
