I heard a piece on npr today that said the author of hunger games might have "stolen" the idea from Battle Royale - which is Japanese.

I guess you could sort of draw that conclusion, but the premise and back story is very different.

Kids killing each other on an island?  Clearly Battle Royale is a rip off of Lord of the Flies

yah, I was thinking about lord of the flies this morning too.

anyway, I don't know either, THG or BR, but the npr piece talked about some very similar details like, for example, kids being picked by lottery, explosive neck collars, and an aoveral theme of showing the brutality of war :dunno:

I don't remember the exploding neck collars in THG

> aoveral theme of showing the brutality of war

This is one of the most common themes in all art

I can't recall an exploding collar in THG either.

Either way, I think the author builds a fairly elaborate world that is different from BR.  Also, at this point, you could probably look at any movie or any book and say 'wow, that has similarities to X'.  I mean really, it's been a long time since I've seen something TRULY original.

I mean, someone could say twilight was based loosely on Dracula.  Or LOTR was based on Star Wars.  You can draw conclusions from anything.

All sorts of races of people/aliens coming together to defeat evil?  I'm just saying that anyone could say a lot of stories have similar parts.

OMG, I didn't know Tolkien had a time machine!  (LotR was published in '54).

One of the classes I started taking basically said that there is one hero story and all other hero stories develop from.  The details change but the same basic story is followed.

I know there have been lots of stories about time machines, but I don't think they're real?

I don't remember that in the movie, but I'm probably confusing it with the book, which had hardly anything to do with the movie
