I think I'm just going to read the books after I see the movies.

By the way, 155 Million first weekend.  That's #3 All Time, right behind Harry Potter #8 and Batman Dark Knight.

Yeah, that worked better for me for Bourne Identity, but they also made a lot more changes for that movie than they did here.

I would have hated that movie if I had read the books first.

Wasn't the book was written in 1980?  It seems reasonable that the film did needed to change things to account for 22 years of tech and political shifts.  Or was it more than that?

I'm pretty sure they were written in the 70s, but the movie made huge plot changes from the book and not just because of the time frame.  The book is so much more complicated than the movie that I think it would have been confusing for people, honestly.

>>hunger games

I think we'll go see it this weekend based on your reviews.

>>made shit load of money

Part of the reason for this is that there is nothing else exciting in the theaters at the moment and hasn't been for a while.

Publication date   February 1980

Yeah, book and movie are really different mediums.  It is really hard for a movie to get too complicated.  But there are some that do require multiple viewings (Fight Club as an example) that do well after the theaters.  I remember from one of my film classes that there is a standard "pace" for Hollywood movies that we are so used it and if a movie deviates too far from that pace it is uncomfortable to watch.

I think it would have done well regardless.

Isn't the spring generally pretty slow for movies?  It's before the summer blockbuster time and after the Oscar rush.

Yeah, I'm not going to argue that it wasn't going up against anything super strong.  But still... the numbers are staggering.

No, I'm not arguing that either.  It looks like it was a well made movie that was based on a super popular book series and it's rated PG-13.  It was gonna make a ton of money whenever it was released, but being up against John Carter and the other crap out there doesn't hurt.
