Photographers! Need advice.
« on: September 25, 2012, 11:23:20 AM »
For work I purchased a Canon EOS Rebel T3.

I need to photograph some fairly tiny parts.  By small I mean capillaries on the order of 0.5mm up to micro-switches about 10mm x 10mm and their solder joints.

Can you recommend a Canon lens for this kind of macro work?

Would this...

or this...
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-100mm-Macro-Lens-Cameras/dp/B00004XOM3/ref=pd_cp_p_1

Suit my needs?  I am still learning and could really use the advice.  Feel free to suggest another lens.

Anyone.  Please!   :)

I am really out of my comfort area and haven't been given the time to learn the skill set.

I have seen some pretty amazing photos in here so it is obvious that the knowledge is available.

I have the 60mm lens you linked.  I can take a few pictures with it if you want.  I'll see if I have anything round the size you are looking for.

From my experience with the 60mm lens you might need the 100mm lens.

Send Robr a PM, he's the man for this sort of thing.

More and more the 100mm lens seems to be the answer.

For the magnification you are looking for I'd think so.

I would expect that a tripod is pretty much a necessity for macro shots of that kind of size to clarity ratio?

I think you would need some seriously steady hands to do it without

Depends on how well you can get into stable firing positions and maintain breath control :D

I would say a tripod and remote trigger (or laptop connection with software) would be useful.

Replied to your PM.

Tripod, ring flash and one of these.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-MP-E-65mm-Macro-Cameras/dp/B00009XVD5

(assuming work is paying).

Both the lenses you linked to will do 1:1 magnification, the 60mm will need to be closer to the subject than the 100mm (which only really matters with insects etc) at maximum magnification.

You do need shitloads of light for macros, especially with the MPE65.
