The other lens that you should consider is the Tamron SP90

http://www.amazon.com/Tamron-AF-90mm-2-8-Di/dp/B00021EE4U/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1348604013&sr=1-1&keywords=sp90

Very sharp macro lens.

This interests me along with the 60mm.  Getting in close is not typically an issue.  Lighting can be added and again is generally not an issue.

The $900 lens is probably overkill.  It is funded by my employer, however I spend money with as much responsibility and wisdom as I can.  I try to spend their funds as if they were my own.

Thanks!!

Good practice, keeps the funding coming.

That said, I will spend the money required to get the results needed for the job.

Here are 4 pics I took of my raspberry pi with the 60mm lens.  These were hand held and I'm not the best.  Shot in jpg with a Rebel 2Ti

Nice.  I take it were the objects larger that could have been accommodated as well?

That one looks like you could've benefited from a ND filter.

Of the 2 Canon lenses, general consensus is that the image quality is pretty much the same for both, but that the 100mm is easier to work with as you have to be pretty close with the 60mm to get 1:1 mag.

Don't forget to budget for a ring flash, or 2 normal flashes + a macro bracket. The reason you need so much light is that to get any sort of DOF you need to stop the lens down massively (small aperture = larger DOF).

Look at Mike's pictures and note how shallow the in focus area is.
