Wireless N

Does anyone have a wireless-N device?  Are they up to the hype?

I know when I was checking them out the draft of the standard that the devices were using was actually a rejected draft.  Looking at wikipedia it looks like N is still in draft.

Not sure if I'd get a device until the standard got out of draft stage at least.

There's enough hardware on the market using it....and while I agree with your statement... I am still curious about it.

I'll tell you if my networking group ever gets the N access point up in testing.

My office definitely has at least two draft-N access points to test (and a few flying saucers that I'd linked to earlier), but can't get it to work with the VLAN/BAG/whatever the hell they did set up.  The vendors assured us that when we put it in, it'll make an incredible difference, but campus-wise, not everyone's gonna have an n-card, and we'll have to put the AP's where all the old ones are anyway.

But if you don't want to get something until the standards are ratified, I wouldn't hold my breath.  I think they've pushed the date back to third or fourth quarter of next year (maybe even later).

Couldn't he just be using an external card?

Technically, I think N is backwards compatible with b/g.  So technically it probably works, but he's not getting any kind of advantage without an N card.

Ober is right.  Like B was with the advent of G.

really? interesting. hes normally full of crap, so it wasnt a big jump to assume it this time. I would be interested to try a true n setup, but i doubt anyone near me has one

Buddy of mine owns a computer/IT store has spent time testing it and really liked it.  Says it is a real leap from G.  However he won't use it unless a customer specifically demands it, because the final release is at least a year away and will very likely not be compatible with the current N product lines.
