who can easily explain what steam is? MW3 runs on "steam" - what is it? what does it do for me? tips tricks?

Steam is an anti-piracy / game managment system.
-
and it is more evil than AOL
-
Just because you fail at using steam doesn't mean it's evil.

Bullshit.

It is a damn annoying delivery system for games/updates/extras/etc. And it doesn't really do anything for you but some games are only available on steam so you are arsed out if you want to play that game.

As digital download services go Steam is the best I have used. What few issues I have had over the years were quickly dealt with to my satisfaction. They have great sales and the best overall selection of games in a single service. They much like any service aren't perfect, but I recommend them wholeheartedly.

Sure it does. It keeps you from having to purchase, store, and maintain your software, keeps games auto-updated, safely stores your gaming library indefinitely, generally has unobtrusive anti-piracy built in (except for GFW crap), and has the best prices in the industry during their seasonal sales. Really, no other similar service comes close.

Steam is great and its not going anywhere. Get over it
-
I don't play shit that requires Steam unless there is a crack to bypass it.

Steam is great
My experiences have been meh at best and hair pulling frustrating at worst. So, IMO, it isn't great. It isn't bad but it isn't great. More often than not it has just been an irritation.
and its not going anywhere. Get over it
Probably not going anywhere in the near future but it'll go away eventually.

The cool thing about steam is that you can install games in your library on as many computers as you want (you can just only be playing from one at a time). You can log into your account from any machine and play any game from your library.

Origin/Steam... same deal. I think these types of managers are going to become more and more commonplace.

Steam ruined HL2 for me all because I forgot my steam info and could not retrieve it. Even though I had all the original crap and my receipt they told me to fuck off and buy another copy.
Fuck steam. I stood in line for hours to get my pre-ordered copy of the collectors edition and for what? To be told two months later to piss of because some gay system they created wouldn't let me in.

Not even close. See above reasons. Yes. They will.

Love steam. It makes everything easy. Great multiple Computer support and cloud. Never has any real problems that weren't resolved...and love the sales...

How is it not the same deal? Origin keeps track of your games, keeps them updated, and they have some pretty awesome deals. They also have all of the social network bullshit that steam does. In my opinion, it's the same fucking thing with a different name.
-
thanks guys. I think I will laod it on my work laptop too then :)

The Origin sales are limited and crappy at best. The Origin game selection is comparatively poor also. Origin does not keep your games indefinitely use them every so often or lose them. The two services are not "the same fucking thing with a different name". I wish they were but they aren't.
Direct2Drive (now owned by GameFly) is the only service close to Steam in both selection and sales. Not sure how they are going to compare now that they are under the GF umbrella.

The best game distribution system out there is GoG. I'm sorry you're all so very wrong.
-
I don't actually believe that but I'll use any opportunity to pimp GoG
-
What does the Gynecologic Oncology Group have to do with it?
-
That should be pretty obvious

I use them also. Nice niche there. I like em.

I really am glad they're around. So many great games that were made in the 90s that you just can't find anywhere else. The fact that they fix them for modern OSes is icing on the cake.
-
I wish they had a larger selection. Read that as where the heck is Grim Fandango?

No argument on the sales being limited. No argument on the game selection... it's not meant to be a platform for all games under the sun. It's an EA specific tool. They make no attempt to hide that fact. I don't agree on the 'indefinitely' comment. Origin picked up games on my system that I haven't played on my current machine even.
At face value, they definitely aren't the same thing. If you understand that Origin is not meant to be a replacement for Steam but a delivery tool for EA, then it's basically the same thing and serves the same purpose ... FOR THOSE GAMES.

Lucasarts is a bunch of dicks. There's no reason not to re-release all their adventures from the 90s again, especially with the success of the Monkey Island remakes and new Sam and Max.
I still have my CDs for Grim Fandango somewhere.
-
I have them also I think. It is notoriously difficult to get it to work though. GoG is good at fixing these things.

Yeah. So basically it is like Blizzard's Battlenet. I agree with that.
