Title: Orange Box System Requirments
Post by: A Bit of Fruit on September 29, 2007, 10:25:41 PM
Does anybody know what kind of video card I will need if I wanna get the Orange Box when it comes out? I really wanna play HL2: Episode 1 and Episode 2 but my graphics card is a shitty geforce4 MX.

Its been 5 years since Ive bought a video card...

BFG is a video card company. You want an BFG Nvidia card. The BFG 6800GT's are down to pretty good prices right now and thats a monster upgrade for you

Looks like BFG is a little pricey for me. What kind of specs should I be looking at for the GPU?

Anything in the FX series really. I wouldnt go less then say a 256MB 5700 LE tho.

BFG costs a bit more upfront, but its lifetime warranty. My buddy had his 6800GT get zapped two days later we had a brand new one from bfg no questions asked. I love their tech support, and their cards are SOLID. I also like Gigabyte and PNY.

Heres one at a good price. Its a solid card i have used for a few people building on a budget. Performs very well for its class, doesnt get very hot, and handles overclocking and tweaks very well.

I use a BFG 6800 Ultra OC 256MB.

http://www.dealtime.com/xPO-GeForce-6800-Ultra-Overclocked-256-MB-AGP-Graphics-Card

Runs everything I have perfectly well.  I tend to be a big fan of Nvidia.  ATI is fine as well.  I wold strongly suggest you stick with the brand you already have because it creates less of a mess with video drivers.  By brand I mean Nvidia or ATI not the sub manufacturer like BFG, Chaintech, Leadtech, etc.

I would also recommend at least 256Mb of memory on the video card.

However this place is always a very good reference.  No bias here.  Just look up the AGP card you can afford and there ya be.

Would you be good enough to post your PC specs?

so looking at Tom's hardware guide, Ive found this as probably my best bet

http://www.sltech.com.au/shop/product_info.php?products_id=11564

Will that work with my mobo/is there any reason why I shouldnt get it?

or maybe this is better for the money

http://vtechindustries.com.au/vtech/productinfo.php?id=LT-PX7600GS-HD

Is PCI-E a problem? My current one is in my AGP slot, does that mean I MUST buy another AGP video card?

edit: i just realised there was an AGP section of the Tom's Hardware article...sigh

You must replace it with a AGP card, unless you are ready to change the mobo in which case your basically getting ready to build a new pc. I think the BFG i linked it too will be your best bet. Powerful, affordable, guaranteed for life.

Yup.

That is why I suggested the AGP cards for ya.  Tom's suggests some great AGP solutions, one of which I listed.
