Title: Deserted Island Historical Figures Draft
Post by: charlie on August 10, 2009, 06:42:38 PM
The Goal: Pick the most interesting group of individuals from throughout history to join you on you on a deserted island for the rest of your life.

How this works
We go in turns one at a time picking people from history to be on our list. You can't take a person that has already been selected. When we're done we compare lists and everybody votes on which they like best. The fun is in seeing what/who interests the other pickers, and trying to pick people you want on your list before somebody else takes them.

Tournament Seeding (draft order in parentheses)

Draft results by round (http://www.entropysink.com/forums/index.php?topic=8864.msg94877#msg94877)
Draft results by person (http://www.entropysink.com/forums/index.php?topic=8864.msg94878#msg94878)

I encourage anybody with even a little bit of interest to participate. The more people there are, the more fun it is. If you're worried about any of the details I'll help you through it. Just give it a go!

Ok, now is the time to discuss rule modifications, additions or deletions, and to declare your participation. This was originally micah's idea, I just made up rules based on how I thought it would work best to be run (and because I like to be rather open-ended about what people are allowed to pick). So if anybody has better ideas, and micah especially, please say so in this thread.

I'm in. The only suggestion I have, and I'm not sure best way to phrase this, but I say no picking someone solely on looks or sex appeal.

+1, we already head that contest.

Cool...

My thinking on not explicitly disallowing sex appeal based picks was in case somebody wanted to add just one or two people based on hotness to round out their islands with a diverse group of people. (It's also a somewhat gray area that can be hard to enforce.)

But I'm certainly on board with making sure everybody focuses on the "interesting" part of the historical person rather than physical features.

So do you want to strongly discourage sexiness picks or just disallow them outright?

With this group I'm sure discouraging is just fine.

can we get a point of clarification on the premise?

are we going for notoriety of historical significance (which might include villainous characters who changed history but who we might not want to be friends with) or just people we want on our island (to help build a shelter, purify sea water, build a radio from coconuts, entertain us with witty banter or their intelligence and maybe have sex with)

Good question!  I was thinking of just picking historical figures I found interesting, not necessarily thinking about being on an island and junk.

I would say assume you can live on the island just fine even if you have nothing but philosophers with you, but if you come up with a useful purpose for a historical figure than that may sway the voting in your favor.  There should be some reason though why you pick this figure beyond the fact that they are famous.

can we get a point of clarification on the premise?

are we going for notoriety of historical significance (which might include villainous characters who changed history but who we might not want to be friends with) or just people we want on our island (to help build a shelter, purify sea water, build a radio from coconuts, entertain us with witty banter or their intelligence and maybe have sex with)

Good question!  I was thinking of just picking historical figures I found interesting, not necessarily thinking about being on an island and junk.

This is how I view it. The island really is meaningless, it's just kind of a goofy theme to drive the "story". Basically, the point is that you would be spending time with these people and only these people.

Each individual can use whatever criteria they'd like in making selections. I was kind of thinking about the interesting people bit. People could be interesting because they lived through or participated in great moments in history, or maybe because they had a specific personality you find intriguing. I think a villainous character would be just fine, I think you can assume you won't get killed or hurt by anybody you pick.

All that's open to discussion, but that's what I was imagining.

Oh, and assume they could all magically speak your language. :)

My first pick...

Jesus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus

I'm not actually Christian, but I think Jesus (assuming he existed as an actual person) would be very interesting on a bunch of different levels. One, I find religion interesting in general, and I'd love his take on modern day religion, including of course Christianity. Also, I find that based on my limited knowledge I like and agree with many of the principles he taught, and discussing his view on the world in general would be pretty darn interesting.

You've all probably heard of and know a bit about Thomas Edison, but Nikola Tesla was, in my opinion, a much cooler scientist/engineer/inventor and much more worthy of fame. Turns out, Edison was pretty much a douche to Tesla. Even while Tesla proposed alternating current transmission for electric power, Edison did everything he could to make AC seem more dangerous and inferior to DC. We all know how that contest ended up--except for the fact that Tesla ended up completely broke despite being a pioneer of one of the most important technologies we still use today. The fact that he claimed to have invented some very unbelievable devices only adds to his intrigue; I still wonder if we might find some of those claims had more truth than people gave him credit for.

its funny too because, had Edison succeeded in suppressing AC power, we'd be screwed because you can't transmit DC over long distance. We never would have had the electrical revolution and would still be stuck in the mid-industrial age.

I'm not entirely sure. I've seen people argue that the stories of Jesus were just an amalgamation of a bunch of other stories from that time period, including many from some Egyptian dude named Horus. I guess that could imply that he didn't exist, but I've always been under the assumption that he was a real person.

If he wasn't, he isn't going to be much fun on the island.

first pick:
Martin Luther
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_luther

while he's a bit controversial for his statements on the Jewish people (many of which were later used as nazi propaganda) his greater good was sparking the Reformation that helped turn religion back into a personal choice instead of a government control.  He fought for non-Latin translations of the bible and opened the common man's eyes to the truth of their religion; showing that salvation comes through faith alone, not through blindly following religious/political leaders.

Teddy Roosevelt

The ultimate mans-man cowboy-president, he was a mixed bag of modern political theory... on the one had, he advocated war with Spain and later  funded and supported a revolution in panama so we could build and lease a canal from them.  On the other hand, he was an environmentalist who preserved hundreds of millions of acres of land and a progressivist who knew that capitalism needs common sense regulation.

George Washington

Followed by:

Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_I_of_England)

Not being too much of a history buff, it appears I will be mostly picking the more famous historical figures and not so much with the more obscure ones. Napoleon Bonaparte
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon

My two favorite stories about Napoleon: After being exiled on Corsica, he escapes and rides out alone to face the army which has been sent to intercept him. He simply says, "Here I am. Kill your Emperor, if you wish," and they shout "Vive l'Empereur!" and go with him.

The other story is that on the eve before Waterloo, his physician prescribed him narcotics (opium?), and some people speculate that he was still under the influence the next morning, causing him to be sluggish in ordering his troops during battle. In other words, Napoleon's empire finally came to an end because he was high.

a friend of Tesla who wrote some of his best works while living several miles from my own home, my third pick is...

Samuel Clemens, AKA Mark Twain
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Twain

A celebrity in his own day, Twain's writings apparently set new standards for American literature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_literature#Realism.2C_Twain_and_James):  "Twain's style – influenced by journalism, wedded to the vernacular, direct and unadorned but also highly evocative and irreverently humorous – changed the way Americans write their language. His characters speak like real people and sound distinctively American, using local dialects, newly invented words, and regional accents."

I think I could have some fun debates with him on my island.

Well Jesus was picked in the first round.... so, if Jesus was the Message, then the next best pick would be the messenger:

Paul the Apostle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_of_Tarsus

While the first 4 books of the Bible's New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) speak of the life and times of Jesus,  the bulk of the remaining books were written by Paul.  These books - most actually letters sent to the churches he founded - go on to explain the meaning of Jesus' life and provide an insight into the beliefs and controversies of early Christianity.  They are foundational to Christian theology and ethics.

Granted, Peter, one of the original 12 guys who hung out with Jesus, is often considered the starter of the first "church" of Christianity (Catholics consider him to be the first Pope) -- BUT, I think Paul's works and prolific writings, garner him a top spot in the list of influential historical figures.

The FCC wasn't established until 1934 and Maxim's work in amateur radio helped assure that the spectrum would remain free and open for (regulated) public use and not become monopolized by commercial and government interests or become a wild-west mess of constant EM interference.
Countless inventions of the 20th century trace their roots back to "amateur" (meaning non-commercial, private, entities) radio electronics which could not have been possible without the organization of early operators by Hiram Percy Maxim.

long before Al Gore invented the Internet to allow the quick and inexpensive mass distribution of written knowledge there was...

Johannes Gutenberg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_Gutenberg

While the idea of movable type preceded Gutenberg in eastern Asia, he was the first to use it with great effect by inventing the printing press.  The historical impact of easily disseminated information is self-evident so I doubt I need to write much more here.

Great pick. I think we have to limit it to just one of them, though. There are just too many duos out there that would be tempting to take as a duo if we had allowed it from the beginning and it would be hard to have a consistent rule.

Michael Lang
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Lang_(producer) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Lang_%28producer%29)

In the 1960's there was a growing subculture of beatniks and degenerates commonly referred to as "the Hippies."  Strung out on psychedelic and opiate drugs, they naively envisioned bringing about peace and love through inaction and a lack of personal hygiene.

The movement peaked in 1968 and probably would have dissipated from public view like the last toke of a cannabis cigarette had it not been for a massive music venue staged in upstate New York dubbed the "Woodstock Music & Art Festival" during the summer of 1969.

Lang, the brainchild and promoter of the festival brought an estimated half-million hipsters to the 3 day festival and, while early media reports attempted to show the group as an anarchist mob, when the mud dried and the smoke cleared, it was obvious that peace and love prevailed.

Later attempts to replicate the festival did not end as well but the damage was done: The Hippie movement was legitimized.

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippies#Legacy
The legacy of the hippie movement continues to permeate Western society. In general, unmarried couples of all ages feel free to travel and live together without societal disapproval. Frankness regarding sexual matters has become more common, and the rights of homosexual, bisexual and transsexual people, as well as people who choose not to categorize themselves at all, have expanded. Religious and cultural diversity has gained greater acceptance. Co-operative business enterprises and creative community living arrangements are more accepted than before. Some of the little hippie health food stores of the 1960s and 1970s are now large-scale, profitable businesses, due to greater interest in natural foods, herbal remedies, vitamins and other nutritional supplements. Author Stewart Brand argues that the development and popularization of the Internet finds one of its primary roots in the anti-authoritarian ethos promoted by hippie culture.

...and the products of that movement are the politicians of today.

He explored the Antarctic, and although he never made it to the south pole, his attempt to cross the continent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Trans-Antarctic_Expedition) is an incredible story. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend the book Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.

I have some catching up to do here...

I've picked a few notables from Christian history (which is at the root of much of modern western civilization)  Along that theme...

Constantine
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_I

Although the Roman empire was generally tolerant of most religions, nearly three centuries after Jesus, Christ's followers were still being persecuted.  Constantine, as emperor, embraced Christianity and  signed the Edict of Milan, declaring religious tolerance within the Roman empire.  The religion was then free to spread through the vast empire.
Title: Re: Deserted Island Historical Figures Draft
Post by: micah on September 25, 2009, 04:46:10 PM
a second pick...

once upon a time, in a land far away, the creator of the universe told a man named Abraham that he would have a son and the decedents of that child would be greater than the stars in the heavens or the sands on the shore.  Abraham's wife was pretty old so, while he had faith in the promise, he thought he'd jump-start the method; specifically, by knocking up his wife's maid.

enter, Ishmael
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishmael

Later, it turns out that Abraham's wife DID get pregnant and they had a son name Isaac who had a son name Jacob who had 12 sons (one of which had a technicolor coat) -- and these sons made up the tribes of the Israelites -- one of which included a guy named David who's (eventual) descendant turns out to be none other than freakin' Jesus. Go figure.

Meanwhile, Ishmael, the bastard son of Abraham, also had a future of which I know nearly nothing about.  But, traditionally, from his descendants come the Arab folk.  Ta-da!

I actually don't think it's that big of a deal. The only problem with that is if somebody wants to swap out a pick that others actually want. Then who gets that person who was de-picked?

In this case I don't mind allowing kermi this one switch, since it would only affect me and I wasn't going to pick that guy anyway. I just like to protect the integrity of the process for the voiceless participants who make these diversions enjoyable.

I don't care if I don't get to use him.  I have to share:

J. M. Cattell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McKeen_Cattell)

The guy started the first clinical psyc lab, developed psyc into a real science, encouraged the development of conditioning research through his recruitment and mentoring as the Chair of Columia's Psyc department from 1885-WWI - when he was fired for being vocal of his pascifist beliefs (so cool that he stood up when he knew what would happen), he founded the Psychological review (major psyc journal), and was a president of the APA.

Coolest thing though: At age 23, he wanted to study with the worlds leading psychologist - Wilhelm Wundt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Wundt) (the father of experimental psychology," a key figure in the development of intelligence research, and in psychometric testing).

Unfortunately, Wundt was in Germany...so with no appointment or correspondence other than a brief meeting 2 years prior, Cattell when to Germany, sat outside Wundt's office until he returned, and said "You don't know it, but you need a graduate assistant, and it's going to be me."  He got the job.

Bad ass scientist for the win.

My pick of the day will be the great Hammurabi, with the Code of Hammurabi.

>the Code of Hammurabi

I saw that at the Louvre, it was pretty freakin cool. It has all kinds of laws from wages for particular professions to the many reasons a person (or his son) should be put to death. The first law system ever recorded.

I don't think it's my turn - but skip me.

I'll be here at work enjoying the pleasures of the "End-of-Fiscal-Year".

Which means I'll be stuck in the office until (at the earliest) 2 AM - O JOY!

Ok, now micah timed out. Maybe we should have stopped after 10 rounds. :p

I'm going to be off the internet for the rest of the weekend, so police yourselves or wait for Monday. PJ won't time out until then anyway.

JaWiB, drakkenkorin, axon and micah can all make up their missed pick whenever they want.

Sorry, been busy with school starting and was having trouble coming up with a good pick. But I think I need more music, and this guy was one of the greats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_mercury

With my last pick I'll go ahead and be a tool and pick Barrack Obama mostly because I'd love to hear his honest take on our present world and would also love to see him debate and share ideas with the others I've picked for my island.

Surprised he lasted this long...

I seriously considered Obama a few times, but probably wouldn't have picked him unless I just couldn't think of anybody else. I'd love to pick his brain but he just hasn't actually experienced enough compared to some of the others out there.

Anyhoo, the draft board is updated. JaWiB will time out tonight so it will be ober's turn when he wakes up. The three with missing picks can get their last two picks in whenever they want, but they'll have to do it before voting starts, which will probably be next week.

Time to get caught up:

Pontius Pilate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontius_Pilate) and King Solomon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Solomon)

I didn't check to make sure no one else had picked them, but hopefully no one has.

I didn't get it either. I still can't decide who my last pick will be, but I'll choose someone before next week

my first of two catch-up picks...

If you've seen the movie Braveheart then you probably still known nothing about...

Andrew Moray
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Moray

A freedom fighter and Scottish patriot, Moray lead his army alongside the famed William Wallace, battling to keep Scottish independence against the inevitable English rule.

Unfortunately, he died at the Battle of Sterling Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stirling_Bridge) leaving Wallace to take over the Scottish forces and, eventually fail.

Soon after his death, his wife gave birth to Sir Andrew Murray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Andrew_Murray) who would take up his fathers cause in the 2nd war for independence.

I'm a fairly proud descendant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Murray).

My last pick...

Cleopatra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleopatra_VII

My island had no women, and a lot of goody-two-shoes. So I'm picking her because she's female and possibly a bit conniving.

kermi, you're up now. Since you're the last pick, everybody can just pick whenever they feel like it.

I think I'll start the voting Monday, so you all have until then to make up missed picks. If you don't pick by then, that's fine, you just end up with fewer people than others during the voting.

We can post honorable mentions Monday, or after everybody makes up their missed picks.

Another recent guy, like or don't like his politics - generally seen as a real good and fun person, though certainly not without flaws:

Ted Kennedy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kennedy)

Sorry... got a little sidetracked on work stuff. The draft is over and we'll start with the tournament as soon as I get my act in gear. axon will just go with ten people.

Meanwhile, feel free to list your honorable mentions. Given how hard it seemed for people to get to twelve there might not be many, but go ahead if you're inclined.

I was considering Van Gogh, Beethoven and Mozart. I really decided against them when I picked Hendrix. I also considered Lincoln. Never got much further than that.
