365 Dni (netflix)
« on: June 29, 2020, 12:16:18 PM »
So, on a whim from the list of netflix's "recommended for you" movies, we watched "365 Days" (the English title for this polish movie).

Knowing nothing about it and based solely on the preview, we began watching... there was a lot of exposition at the beginning which, turns out, had nothing to do with the plot.  And then, the longer we watched, we realized there WAS no plot.  It's basically a soft-core porn movie.  If you made a drinking game and took a shot every time one of the main characters orgasmed , you would be wasted about 45 minutes in.
Sorta had a 50 Shades of Grey vibe going on, misogynistic and kinda rapey.
That said, it was entertaining in that there was this constant feeling that at some point, there would be a "plot twist" that made the whole thing make sense. A compulsion to just keep watching, partially for the eroticism and partially because you keep telling yourself something "has to happen" or they wouldn't have made this movie, right?
Then, finally, in the last 30 seconds, there is a major plot twist in the style of a shakesperian tragedy.
We both yelled at the screen "What the fuck was that" in unison as the credits appeared.

Jake might like it because there's a lot of polish speaking with english subtitles.  Also a lot of Italian.  Luckily, the two main characters use English as their common language when together.  Although, that's just mostly while having sex.

5/10.

LOL - my wife sent me a story about this - we'll probably watch it... just because.

If you watch it, be sure to post here, I'm really curious what you guys think.

Honestly, I'm assuming the book it is based on is much better and full of details.  The movie makes these sort of assumptions that the audience knows the history of what is going on.  It's like they just cut out so much to make room for all the titillation that they forgot to let people understand the backstory.  There were several times where I thought out loud, "did I miss a scene?"  "why did she change her hair color?"  "who is this random character they're introducing at the end of the movie who's all of a sudden an important person?" etc etc.

Part of me is so taken aback by the movie that I almost want to read the book.  Not sure if its in English.

I have not heard about it - but will check it out.
