Off Site Backup
« on: November 02, 2008, 06:49:17 AM »
Anybody use an off site backup(s)?

I would expect that you folks that support businesses have an advanced version of this kind of thing.

I purchased Carbonite a couple of weeks ago.

It takes weeks for the initial backup, but at least now I am not totally hardware dependent and if something happens here (home) I haven't lost everything.

I used it, but let it expire - they don't do Linux :(

www.getdropbox.com

A buddy of mine just turned me on to this.  Currently I think they limit you to 2Gb, but that will probably change.

And it's free!  https://www.getdropbox.com/faq

And I just wanted to add that was use a full disaster recovery system at work.  If our entire data center got destroyed, we could be back online in about 90 minutes with almost no data loss.

How about a hosting provider? You can get unlimited storage for $5/mo with someone like hostgator. Encrypt the data before throwing it up there and call it a day.

I haven't actually implemented it yet but I'm thinking about it. Just have to organize my crap and come up with an encryption key.

I drop stuff on my dedicated usually but hosting usually seems to be slower for file transfers. I backup about 60gb on a regularbasis and it sucks

The one I mentioned is more than just storing the files.  It's like a synchronized sharing of files.  I don't think it's meant as a means of backup.

And hosting is another way to go, but I agree that the transfer speeds are not great.  But if you set a scheduled job it probably wouldn't be that bad.

Yea xdrive sucks imo but I thought the other was just storage space. I have a schedule for my reg documents but I don't know how well it would work for media

The cool thing about dropbox is that if you keep the documents in there, it does all the backup work for you whenever the file is changed.

I know its not useful for large amounts of data but one thing I do is run subversion on an old computer I have lying around. It uses a Cron Job to checkout the code daily and email it to my google account.
