Burner dying?
« on: August 22, 2005, 03:11:59 PM »
So I have my trusty old TDK 12x CD-RW in my PC... and it's worked great up until recently.  But now Windows doesn't seem to recognize it anymore.  It powers up fine and I can load cds into it, but Windows doesn't even know it exists.  I swear the last time I booted up, the BIOS recognized it.  And the power and IDE cables are plugged in properly and I know I haven't messed with the jumpers.

Anyone have a clue what might be causing this other than the drive just being on its last leg?

If everything works but windows recognizing it id try reinstalling the drivers.

Or not using Windows at all.

Come with me ober, break free from the BSoD's, the failing drivers and the scummy look:

Otherwise, yeah, it sounds either like your drivers are buggered or the drive itself has conked out (I had one do it recently, refused to 'see' discs, let alone write to them).

A bit obvious, but have you done an add/remove from Device Manager?

Well, it doesn't show up in the Device Manager... and doing a scan for new hardware shows nothing.

It's got to be hardware then, by the sounds of it.  You could pick up a 52x pretty cheap.

Actually, I think I might just remove it.  I have my old DVD player which is good enough to use for playing games, and if I really need to burn a CD, I'll use my wife's computer.  Plus, that'll be one less thing generating heat.

a BIOS thing? Recognition of drives begins and ends there
