Looks pretty interesting, and at $25 the price is pretty cool too. Not bad for a bit of web surfing etc.
-
Um... read the full FAQ. You'll need to spend $35 to get the ethernet port (model B).
There has been a lot of hype over this but I question the practical usage of it. Seems interesting in general but you still have to have a keyboard, mouse, and a monitor or TV. For anyone that needs a low-end computer like this, they might not have those items.
-
Could you use this as a really cheap media PC, just storing media on the SD card or streaming it from somewhere?
-
It seems like they really don't give you shit.

In theory, yeah. It has an HDMI port and it's meant to connect to a TV or something. You'd probably have better luck streaming from either an external HD or your local network though. You're not going to get much on an SD card.

That's kind of the point?

It looks like it's a microSD, and you can get 32GB microsd cards pretty cheap. I wouldn't totally replace streaming movies and things from my PC with it, but it seems like it'd be a nice cheap simple way to access some things without having to put a physical PC in my living room
-
Well, yeah... forgot you could get those cards that big. I guess I don't worry about that type of usage since my Tivo already streams across my network.
-
My XBox does too, but only for specific file formats (and then of course Netflix and other apps it has), but it'd be kind of neat to have something that could do Hulu and youtube and whatever else.
edit: not to mention games
-
... get a Tivo. ;)
Not sure how you'd do the games part. Rasberry pi definitely would not help with that. It doesn't have the power.
-
Oh, I definitely wouldn't be trying to do anything modern, but it'd be neat to play simcity or something on a 55" TV. I 've got no idea what would run on linux. Just thinking out loud
-
Other uses:
- Cheap way to give students a computer for school use. It is powerful enough to run quite a lot. It is small and compact so they could easily transport it between home and a lab.
- An easy base for building devices.
- Sheer geekness
-
Micah, are you reading this?

Sure. Just stick a USB HDD on it, and you're gtg.

Gah. Knew I'd seen it somewhere before.
It seems like they really don't give you shit.
For $25 you want a Macbook Pro?

So it finally shipped!

And of course it arrives about 40 minutes before I'm taking off to go camping for a couple of days.

Posting this from my Raspberry Pi

How is it?

How is it?
Kinda cool. Had a problem with it and a HDMI connection to a monitor so I ended up plugging it into the TV, finished the setup, and then it worked fine with the HDMI. I need to read up on how to use the I/O ports.

Still waiting for mine to ship...

you reminded me about this in the photo thread. How are you liking it after having it for some time? I'm thinking of getting one to serve as a simple computer to play web kids games on hooked to a TV.
-
Got one. Bought a cheap usb hub that was allegedly compatible but wasn't; used an old brick d-link that worked fine. Rather quaint using a tv for a monitor. Alas Christmas beckons so pi-time delayed.
-
Got mine a couple days ago too. Think I'll probably use it as a media center until I have something better to do with it (and more time to play with it)

wow, I'm really interested in that android 4.1 device. It looks pretty slick
-
Finally got round to getting a couple of these. Not going to do much more with them that use them to run some rotating dashboards in our ops room with https://github.com/stevepeak/taberific and http://sourceforge.net/projects/iwk-rpi/ but it's a start...

I'm probably going to be ordering a couple BeagleBone Black devices shortly. One to play with for a pinball machine controller and the other for a mini desktop. I think they're better than the Pi for things and roughly the same price.
