Best Quad Core Processor
« on: March 12, 2008, 01:39:42 PM »
Within reason.

I'm looking to build another desktop that's purpose will be development and everyday use. I'm planning on running Ubuntu as my main OS but running a VMWare instance of Windows that will pretty much be running all of the time. It will be up on a secondary desktop panel for quick switching.

I was just going to go with an AMD X2 but now I'm thinking since I'll be running the multiple OS's (and possibly one or two small instances for dev/testing purposes) I might be better off just getting a quad core.

I was thinking of just going with something like the Intel Q6600.

6600 is the way to go.

Look RoD fuck AMD for now.

They are well behind and are not going to catch up anytime in the near future.

Deal.

Hope that AMD gets off of their dead asses and produces something that actually gives Intel a run for their money.

The AMD products are slower, have had serious production errors, and are not overclocking much if any better than recent Intel offerings.

My guess is that we are seeing the end of AMD as a serious Intel competitor and Intel will rule the high end market for a good long time to come.  AMD may never recover.

My hope is that I am wrong.  Unlike the Intel fanboy crowd, I actually like AMD.

Another company that may eventually give Intel a run for the money might just be Nvidia.

I think AMD can recover. They've always been the underdog and likely always will be. They seem to have just run into some flops as of late. Which when it happened to Intel not long ago is what gave AMD and edge for a while. They just have to quit playing catch up and one up Intel here with their next product.

I agree though. Right now Intel seems to be the way to go (unless you're building a budget PC).

Facts are for paper. The truth is on paper intel often looks better then amd, but as history shows the butt dyno / real world performance tends to tip to the amd side of the scale. In this case i havent had the chance to use the intel, only the amd. BUT based on previous experience, and the phenomanl performance of the amd, i find it hard to believe the intel is truely better.

Microcenter has them on sale right now for $199. I think I'll be picking one up. But now I need to redo all my research on motherboards to find a good match.
