Stupid toolbars at the bottom of pages
« on: July 01, 2010, 05:35:35 PM »
Anyone else getting a bit frustrated annoyed by the frequency of websites putting those stupid toolbars at the bottom of their sites? I understand the desire to be cool and all and get more facebook fans and such but really, is it possible we can stop this before it becomes the next web standard?

I haven't really noticed it.  Maybe it's just the shitty sites you visit. :p

I pledge, as a programmer, not to ever build one of these toolbars*

Our site manager was showing me a demo of a bottom-floating social toolbar for our blogs :(. I told him I was vehemently against the idea, and tried explaining how annoying they were, but I don't know what they're doing in the end. To be fair, it had some cool tools, but I don't think anyone's going to change how they browse the Web just for a single site ("Gee, I wonder if there are new posts? Well, instead of loading the page when I want to see new stuff, I'll just leave it open all day, switch to it, and open this "new posts" widget on the toolbar! GENIUS!!!!").

Hate hate hate.

FUCK... I might actually have a use for one of these things.  I'm re-writing some billing software and our PMs have a page where they enter all billable units and projections for projects.  The page can get kind of long because the projects can last several years but they want to always have the details about the service line available no matter where they are on the page.  So my options are either:

1) Floating toolbar at the bottom
2) Put the data entry into a scrollable table (which I fucking loathe)

I'm not against the concept of the informational toolbar if it's appropriate for the site, I'm just not a fan of the crapware filled ones with every possible social networking/bookmarking/searching etc combination in it.

I agree that it has its place, and it sounds like you have a good example of that.

I know the one you're talking about and I really wanted to throw my laptop across the room when it would keep opening up.
