right now my problem is that nothing works.  most of my utilites open and instantly close.

if i try to open them from the terminal I see the error message: "segmentation fault" which after some googling brings me back to the fact that either the RAM or the mother board connection on this POS laptop is busted.

is there a way to get ubuntu to recognize the portion of the RAM that don't work and then ignore them?  IIRC, when i ran memtest a few weeks ago there were like 6,000+ errors... and the 2GB show as 1.8 GB.

I'm thinking thats my latest problem.  On the plus side, the internet works fine.

that looks promising.  to bad I have no clue what I'm doing.  I'll have to mess with that later when I have some time. I'm on my way out for the evening
