Title: is this modern gaming?
Post by: Jake on February 06, 2015, 08:51:19 AM
I had an itch to play some FPS last night around 8PM. I found the last game I purchased: COD MW3. I put in the disc, installation starts with the Steam engine. It installs, and then nothing else. The CD doesn't spin, the actual game is not installing. I launch Steam but it can't connect to server. bummer. I go on the website and download the newest stream engine. That works. I find my login through the game key. That part was cool. and hey I can download my game from Steam! also cool - but the fucker is like 15GB. Ef that, I'm installing from the CD. It starts...and then it quits. Let's try again. Starts. Quits. WTF?? Well, I then found out it starts from the CD but triggers the download from steam!!! I search in steam's help why this is happening - pretty simple solution, have to begin install manually from the CD via run. OK, whatever. So I install the game...by this time it is 11:30PM. But nope, can't play - need to install 14GB of updates...at ~2Mb DL speeds from steam. WTF!?! I went to sleep. My itch is gone. this fucking sucks that just to play a game you have to jump through all these hoops. bummer.  :suicide2:

Not too uncommon to install the game from steam.  Not even sure why they bother with the CD anymore.  It isn't so bad if you keep everything up to date and install ahead of time.  As to why:  You just said it, it was a 14G download.  Not putting that on a CD (maybe a DVD with really good compression).  Also, get a faster internet.

Yup, that's modern gaming.  Pretty common but rarely an issue unless you never game.

Agree with Mike and Obes.  By modern gaming standards 15GB is not very large.  It is not unusual to see 50GB and above.  I think GTA V is 50.

Also gaming is like any other hobby.  If you don't do the basics to stay up to date you will have a few hurdles to overcome.  Think of storing a for wheeler for an extended period.  Gas goes bad, lines can crack, blah, blah.

Pick a few games on Steam (or whatever), install them, and let Steam keep them auto updated.  Updating video drivers is on you, however AMD and Nvidia both have utilities that help keep you up to date.

I hear that the ONLY FPS to play is BF4...  :D

Umm... what do you have?  That's pretty standard for the US (fuckin sad, I know).  And I've looked into it, you're often limited by the server speed as well so getting a 'faster' connection will rarely provide you with benefit.

I have 50 down 5 up.  When I pull from steam I'm generally getting 15 from them.  The rest I can use for other things at the same time.

you guys pay to much for internet.

we have no problems streaming netflix and surfing the web at the same time on more than one device.

Internet plus basic "family package" cable = $85/mo

The basic part of my bundle for TV + Internet is only $80 / month.  The rest is the stupid equipment fees and the fact that I want a HD DVR.

I get roughly 17mb down and 1mb up. I generally don't have issues. I can't justify paying more.

And holy shit knuckle, I didn't realize they offered a package that high.

One thing I could really do without:  Waiting for steam to install DirectX every time I get a new game.  My DirectX is up to date, it shouldn't take more than a second to confirm that!

Start the install and as soon as that comes up kill it and restart it again.  Ta da.

played for a few hours over the weekend. The first few games were rough but then I got back into the swing of things. Kill ratio still not as good as before but hovering around 1:1

Overall experience is kind of mixed - there are a lot more hackers around. And they don't care that people know it to. In the few games I played I've seen 3 moab's!

Less hackers in BF4 and lots more fun.  Seriously, talk to anyone that has played both games.  They don't even compare.

I have played both.  BF4 is in every way I can think of, vastly superior.  IMO

Haven't played shooters in FOREVER...I hear a ton about console shooters from my students though - sounds like they've just become DLC/micro-transaction whoring devices with little to no consumer facing innovation.  I swear - when some fancy new skin (Zombie DLC) is coming out, I'll have at least 3 young men worried about whether or not they'll get to play the day it comes out cause they have to play the day it comes out to get the green zombie hair.  Biggest incentive ever to not play shooters....

If I play for more than few weeks than I'll buy BF4...but knowing me, I'll get tired of playing overall in a few days after I get my fix. We'll see.

You'll get your 'fix' on COD because you'll realize it's shit and not worth playing for an extended period.  Just sayin'.

That is Obers' game.  I have it and have played, but not like the OberKiller 2 billion.  Boy is a master of that shit.

Me?  I play tons games.  From $6 indy games to full $60 AAA.  With rare exception I wait until a game is at least 60% off to purchase it.  Also I am not purchasing any games for the next six or seven months to catch up on a few I haven't finished.

As amazing as BF4 is, and it is amazing, I have trouble keeping up with the speed, and detail.  Picking out an enemy distinguishing them from friendlies and killing him in time during a firefight is getting beyond me in my dotage.   :(

Jake there are tons of amazing games that aren't shooters that aren't console games.  The Mass Effect series and Witcher series come to mind.  Also Shadow Run Returns, Paper Sorcerer, The Wolf Among Us, and Broken Age.

By the way if you like the South Park humor, Stick of Truth is freaking amazing.

More than likely. BF4 is a beast but the specs for MW3 were similar if I recall correctly.

BF4 is kind of in its own class.  You get a better card it will eat it.

And I agree the bump from 770 to 970 is not enough to make the $ worth it until you realize how much you can sell your 770 for.  You can get a 970 for a steal with the funds from the 770!  Craigslist is your pal.

Ben has an Nvidia GTX770.  One generation old and pushing two years old.  Damn fine card to say the least.  New they were around $450.

Nvidia just introduced the Nvidia GTX970.  A solid bump in performance from the 770.  That said not enough to pay $340 which is the going price for the 970.

Now, since Nvidia is no longer making the770 anymore the folks who need one (so they can put two together) will pay more for a used unit than you might think.

So.  Say a used 770 was going for $210, now they might be pushing $260.  Thus Ben sells his two year old 770 for $260 on Craigslist.  Then gets a brand new 970 for $330.  He gets a new card of the latest build for $70.  Seems like an easy decision.

Please note I haven't researched the numbers.  Those are likely fairly close however Ben would have to do a quick search to see what is what and do the math.  I have done this myself in the past and it is a fairly common practice in the gaming group I socialize with.

I can't even justify the $70 though since I run everything on high settings and it spits out the graphics like it is child's play.

No, we can play the base maps just fine.  I have premium so I have a bunch more maps and I'd recommend it if you get into the game.

This is a much different experience from cod. Maps are huge. There is a lot going on. Pace is a little slower but that's due to the distances. Much more "real" in some aspects than cod...going in and out of crouch or prone, for example. However not when sniping with a scope...it is perfectly still. I played a few maps last night and need to learn those first. I also like that at least at the server I played there was no one or two players that racked a huge number of kills...30 is the most I saw I think.

Title: Re: is this modern gaming?
Post by: ober on February 16, 2015, 12:25:50 PM
Play conquest.  That's the main game mode that I play 98% of the time.  And pace of the game will vary depending on the number of players, map, and game mode.  You can get some VERY fast paced games.  There is a server that does 24/7 pistol and knife on Operation Locker that I play sometimes that usually has 64 players and it's non-stop.

And you will get some rounds where some players have a large number of kills in comparison.  Also keep in mind that if you get revived you won't get a death.  It helps to play in decent squads.

I'm still trying to learn this game. It is much different than COD. The maps are fucking gorgeous. It is insane. And I love the fact you can pretty much destroy everything in them. I love this game and am sorry I did not try it out earlier. The only confusing part is managing the load out and the briefcases and shit like that. I still don't get it.

Have a specific question?  Your loadout is just what the soldier class is carrying.  You get a primary and secondary weapon (usually a rifle and a sidearm), 2 additional slots for things like med packs and defib paddles (or rocket launcher/repair tool), and then a grenade slot.  Plus you have a spec you can choose too.  You have to unlock options for each class as well.

The briefcases are just bonuses that you get when you level up your soldier (point based) or level up a weapon (for every 100 kills).  The briefcases will have point boosts or weapon unlocks (scopes, grips, etc.) or stuff to customize your emblem.

bf4stats.com shows some of the class unlocks better than Battlelog does.

Oh, and if you have any questions about guns, let me know.  I've spent an obscene amount of time researching the best weapons.

Assault: m416 (you almost have it unlocked)
Engineer: AK-5C (you have that one already) or MPX (requires dragon's teeth)
Support: u100-mk5 (you have this already)
Recon: m40A5 (almost unlocked) until you get the SRR61
Pistol: P226 until you unlock the G18

Sorry, one more thing... the point boosts!  USE THEM!  Hit Escape while in the game and choose one in the lower right.  You'll get tons of extra points and rank up faster.  I didn't realize they were there until I hit like rank 60 or something.

I may join you guys this fall when I build my new rig.

I am going to wipe my system, and set it up for my brother then send it down to him.  It will suit him well with an nice filtered  modded case, Sandy Bridge, an SSD, and GTX970.

I am in the process of cleaning my under played or unplayed games up until then.

By the way The Wolf Among Us is stellar.
