it's a massively multiplayer game where you travel between star systems in a galaxy. (This galaxy contains only around 200 stars). It is very involved: you can make money through colonies, trading, doing barge runs for rich guys, hunting bot ships, ferrying passengers, selling artifacts...  The only limiting factor is that everyone gets a max of 5000 of fuel and it only builds back up over time.

You also have to pay rent to stay somewhere in safety while you're not logged in (unless it's a colony you own, in which case it depends on its defenses). Some star systems (and colonies) are under UN protection, which mean you pay taxes for each hour you stay there. You can also take you chances in some empty area in the galaxy and hope that nobody comes across and destroys your ship

That sounds like a really neat concept.  Maybe I'll try it soon.

Sounds a bit like Gamma World - a kind of rpg that grew up shortly after d&d, IIRC. There was another one like that but I can't remember what it was called. I only ever played Gamma World (or maybe it was the other one..?) once or twice many years ago but it seemed okay from what I remember.
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?.

I played it for a while this morning. When I logged off I had about $50k i think. I don't know what to do with these colonists though!

start a colony, duh! :p or dump them at the nearest spaceport. you'll lose reputation for dumping them in outer space though...

you can start a colony by buying a dome for 40k at one of the starbases, finding an unoccupied planet, and choosing a location you can easily defend. there's more info here: http://www.starportgame.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=432&sid=6f09fc6bba79633b23135f957397f0c1

Eh I stopped playing this game a while ago. It was alright, but I experienced 100% packet loss (apparently) on the first server I played on, which I didn't realize until the second day...
