Title: Fitness megathread - discuss weight loss, fat loss, working out, etc here!
Post by: Steve on June 04, 2007, 12:31:16 PM
so heres the dealio. I'm skinny, i pretty much always have been. I exercise a few times a week, ride a bike, etc. My diet isnt the best food in the world, but i do eat well and i watch what i eat. If i do eat something thats not so good for me, i dont eat alot and i compensate for it. I drink water, watch my salt intake, etc.

Yet i still have LOVE HANDLES. These damn things wont DIE. I'm now considering a fat burner type pill to help me burn them off during exercise. Thoughts?

What do you do for exercise?  Remember, fat is deposited where your body says it's going to be deposited, and no amount of working that area out is going to change that.  In fact, if you're working your obliques to get rid of love handles, your problem will just get worse as you build more muscle under the fat.

Really, the biggest key to losing stuff like that is going to be diet.  Those are usually the last things to go when you're losing weight, and you usually have to have pretty low body fat to get rid of them.

edit: Also I wouldn't use fat burners at all.  Gimmicky shit.

I start doing some lifting, pulls, shit like that on my wieghtbench to warm up. Then i go ride the bike around 3-5 miles depending on how my knee feels. After that i do some cardio, some exercise i got off the net designed for obliques, and some more lifting.

My diet isnt great, but i eat alot of steak, hamburger, pasta, and things like that. I quit drinking beer/alcohol for the most part. When i do drink i try not to drink alot. Since feb i have been drunk twice, and other than that i havent really drank. I have been trying to get rid of them for a long time now. I dont have much, but its there and i cant stand it.

> some exercise i got off the net designed for obliques

Working your obliques is not going to eliminate fat on the obliques.

When you say lifting, what are you doing?  Do you have a routine or do you just fart around and move weights?  When you say you do cardio after biking (which is cardio, but really only a warmup for the amount you're doing), what are you doing?

edit: How many calories do you eat in a day?

I read a blurb on getting rid of love handles a few years back.  Long story short it is nearly impossible.  To do it long term for most people isn't possible at all without serious health risk.  Stallone fought it for years.  Finally had them surgically removed for Rocky 4.

I have one of the benches with all the pully's and what not on it. I do the arm one where i push it out and up, the pull down bar, the fold in (the arms have pins that come out, and they squeeze in). I also do curls. As for cardio i use the bike, the step-master thing on the bench. I dont know if these count as cardio but i also do crunches, pushups, leg lift, and pullups.

I would run/jog but my knee cant handle that yet. Well in short bursts it can, but not too much. Cant even take too much on leg lifts.

mine arent THAT bad. I'll have to take a picture. I went swimming the other day at a friends and one of the cute lil hootchies told me my love handles are gettin flabby now its fucking with me. I've been working on them for months, though.

This blurb is pretty stupid then.  It's no different than losing any other bit of fat.  Most people aren't willing to modify their diet and exercise enough to make that possible, and a really startling number of people are of the "spot training is possible" bandwagon.  This leads to people building up muscle under the fat and making them look a lot bigger than it is.

There are well designed routines everywhere on the web, there's no reason to just hop on a bench and do what you want, since it's probably not going to accomplish what you want, especially when you don't know the names of the exercises you're doing.

I can post some examples for you if you want, they're very helpful.  They use the legs a lot and I know you're not too keen on doing that right now, but there are ways to work around that.  Your legs are some of the biggest muscles in your body and your progress accelerates dramatically when you actually work them.

Not being any kind of an expert in (getting rid of them) you are probably right.  Just thought I would toss that in.  I remember that they were interviewing Mr. Universe people and Hollywood "shirt-off" stars along with the usual nutritionist folk.

I don't see it as an issue as long as you stay healthy.  Well...unless you make your living showing your lack of handles off.

If you want to do cardio specifically to burn fat, look into high intensity interval training.  It's got the benefit that it can be impact-free (you can doing it running, swimming, or on an elliptical), and studies have shown that it's 9 times as effective burning fat than regular medium intensity cardio

This is the one I do now:

Day 1 (Upper Body) All movements 8 sets of 3 at a 5 rep max with 60 seconds rest
BB Bench Presses
Seated Rows
Pull-Ups
Standing DB Shoulder Presses

Day 2 (Lower Body) All movements 3 sets of 8 at a 10 rep max with 90 seconds rest
BB Squats
Leg Raises
DB Deadlifts
Decline Bench Sit-Ups
Standing Calf Raises

Day 3 (Cardio for Recovery)

Day 4 (Upper Body) All movements 3 sets of 8 at a 10 rep max with 90 seconds rest
45-Degree Incline DB Bench Presses
45-Degree DB Rows
Standing BB Curls
Standing Reverse-Grip Tricep Press-Downs

Day 5 (Lower Body) All movements 8 sets of 3 at a 5 rep max with 60 seconds rest
Hack Squats
Lying Leg Curls
Lying Leg Raises
Seated Calf Raises

I'm substituting Back Squats for Hack Squats, and something else for Lying Leg Raisess, because Hack Squats tear the shit out of my calves and I suck at holding a dumbbell between my legs for leg raises.  You'll also notice that almost none of these are done on machines.  Machines only work one specific muscle at a time.  Using free weights on heavy compound lifts allows me to kick the shit out of more than one muscle at a time (ie deadlifts work basically everything below your chin in some way).  It's more efficient and you don't end up looking like those weirdos at the gym with giant biceps but no triceps and stick legs.

I started with this one
Monday – Heavy Day
Squat – 5 sets of 5
Bench – 5 sets of 5
Bent Over Row – 5 sets of 5

Wednesday – Light Day
Squat – 4 sets of 5
Military Press – 4 sets of 5
Deadlift – 4 sets of 5

Friday - Medium
Squat – 4 sets of 5, 1 triple, back-off
Bench – 4 sets of 5, 1 triple, back-off
Bent Over Row – 4 sets of 5, 1 triple

You'll notice there are squats every day there.  Some people are against squats because they think they're bad for your knees.  They're wrong (http://www.exrx.net/Kinesiology/Squats.html).  With your knee though, I'd be careful.  Don't be afraid to move heavy weight, but listen to your body.

Also, one of the best resources out there is exrx.net.  You can search there for pretty much every exercise under the sun, and they'll tell you how to do it safely and which muscles it targets.

edit: I just looked at the pictures - how long have you been lifting?

Steroids aren't going to turn you into some musclebound tower of awesome.  You're not getting stronger because your workout sucks and your diet probably sucks.

edit: to elaborate, you're doing

arm one where i push it out and up - I don't know what the fuck this is.  Do you mean like a hammer press?
the pull down bar - this works your lats (back), but is much better replaced by rows
the fold in (the arms have pins that come out, and they squeeze in) - I don't know what the fuck this is either, but I'm going to guess you're talking about flys, which works your chest, but is much better replaced by a bench press or other things
curls - obviously these work your biceps, but there are better ways to do this
crunches - are worthless unless you're doing them weighted and your bodyfat is way lower than yours is
pushups - worthless unless you're doing them with weight, like a backpack full of stuff
leg lift - this is good, but you'd benefit from doing them weighted
pullups - pullups kick ass

so you're doing 1 lift that works your biceps, one that works your chest, one that works your back, and one that targets most of your upper body (the pullups).  That's it.  You also didn't say how much weight you do or how many reps or how many sets.

Your workout is awful.  I'm not trying to be a dick, but it is.  You've got no lower body work (which will be good for your knee if you take it slow), everything you're doing is isolation except the pullups, and you seem really misinformed as to training in general.  I'm thinking a lot of it has to do with you using that home gym thing.  You seem locked into doing stuff on that, but I'd really recommend going to some local gyms, finding one that has dumbbells up to like 100+ lb, tons of barbells, a squat rack/power cage, and some cardio equipment.  Seriously, they're not that expensive and most will have trainers that will help you with your form and make sure you're not going to hurt yourself.

Thanks for the tips, going to try it your way lol. And your right, i need to push my legs more. I can tell from the slowly building starts of  "flab" that they are suffering from the knee surgery. Time to start it back up and see what it can take.

Thanks man, ill try this stuff and do some more reasearch. I'll try and take pics of the bench later and describe what i meant

Actually cheez, can you recommend a good way to burn of the layer of fat around my gut? It's been there pretty much since I lost a crap load of weight a few years back, my core strength is pretty good, and I do crunches, I just can't seem to shift that last kilo or two of fat that's sitting there.  I don't want a six pack as such, I just want a reasonable bit of definition in my abs and I can't do it with a layer of lard covering it.
Title: Re: fat burner

The last time I'm going to say this: there is no way to spot reduce fat.  If you've got extra fat in a place, the only way to get it to go away (aside from liposuction) is to lower your overall bodyfat.  Your body decides where it's putting fat, and for guys it's just naturally more in the gut area.  The number one way this is affected is by diet, but if you lift weights and put on muscle, you will burn calories faster (as muscle burns more calories than fat).  You can also do HIIT, which as I said is the most effective non-lifting non-diet way to get rid of fat.

Doing crunches with a layer of fat over your abs will only make your belly stick out more.  It sucks, but it's the way it is :(

edit: Since I've covered that fitness myth several times, the idea that to gain mass you lift huge weights for low reps and to burn fat you lift small weights a billion times isn't really true.  It boggles my mind when I see people at the gym doing like 30 reps of a 20 pounds on some machine, usually while reading a magazine.  This does NOTHING.

Gotcha, it just clicked (what you meant by spot reduce).  Well I lost it all by running, I'll just keep hammering the cardio and get the body weight down.  I'm still on the upper of a good BMI, need to get that down.  My diet is actually really good.  I eat a fair amount of low-GI food, I don't drink softdrink, I don't eat chocolate, I don't eat take-away food more than once a month, I hardly touch coffee and when I do it's fresh ground, I have cut right back on my drinking which is usually one or two pints of a friday, the odd one on the weekend.  I also have quit smoking.  I could stand to eat more fruit, that's probably about it.

> So did you find all this out through research or a trainer?

Research, doing it myself, and talking to other people.  If you remember (somehow), my gym membership came with a trainer's visit, but it was pretty worthless.  We didn't do any free weights at all, and I stuck to his routine for about 2 weeks.  I've still got a lot to go, but I've raised all my lifts a TON.  My main problem is my diet, but that's getting better :)

> Well I lost it all by running, I'll just keep hammering the cardio and get the body weight down.

Yeah, lots of people do that.  There's no problem with it, but at some point you need to lift in order to build muscle tone or else you end up skinny-fat (kind of like RoD looks in the pictures)

>  I'm still on the upper of a good BMI

BMI is intended for sedentary individuals.  If you have any muscle at all, you'll be listed as overweight or obese.  Most athletes are listed as obese by that standard because muscle weighs so much more than fat.

>  My diet is actually really good.

Sounds like it :)  One thing you might want to do is keep a food log (www.fitday.com is great for this).  Find your BMR (basal metabolic rate - the amount of calories you burn by doing nothing at all) and try to eat about 3-500 calories below that.  If you try to get a mix of calories of 40% protein 40% carbs and 20% fats you'll be doing really well.  Make sure the carbs are whole grains with as little sugar as possible and try to eat "good fats" (monounsaturated).  Remember that dietary fat is not the same as fat on your body; eating something with 40 grams of fat is not going to add 40 grams of fat to your frame.

> I also dont feel i eat enough steak. My dads trainer used to sweat by it. Said steak should be a 2night a week meal lol.

Be careful with it.  If I were in your shoes, I'd probably try to eat about 3000 calories a day, trying to get as much as possible from lean meats (mostly chicken and turkey, but some steak too).  If you eat big and lift big, you will get big.  If you do it cleanly (minimal amounts of junky shit), you'll gain lots of muscle with less fat.  It's pure math.

>>If you remember (somehow), my gym membership came with a trainer's visit, but it was pretty worthless.  We didn't do any free weights at all, and I stuck to his routine for about 2 weeks.<<

Kind of like my "routine" at the moment that the trainer setup...it has a really good cardio program, but a pretty shit boring set of pin-weight machine work.  I can lift more on bench than I can on the chest machine anyday.  It's too awkward for me.  The only ones I like are the leg press, the lat pull down and supported row.  Last year I was doing a program out of a weights book that my dad had..can't recall the author but I was starting to bulk up with on 10kg dum's and 25kg barbell doing all manner of curls, flys, squats etc.  I really ought to steal it from him next time I'm over at my folks place.

>>One thing you might want to do is keep a food log (www.fitday.com is great for this).  Find your BMR... <<

I'll look into that thanks.  I've switched to brown rice and wholemeal pasta, and any sugar I add is raw sugar (usually only in my tea).  I try to use honey as a sweetener for cereal rather than sugar as well.  I guess you could count the odd Gatorade as well.

Yeah, definitely.  5-6 low carb, high protein meals of 500 calories a day.  With a job like yours I'd be bulking up big time.  Pick up some whey protein and creatine.  Immediately after your workout, mix two scoops of whey, a teaspoon of the creatine, and 12 oz of water or milk.  If you've got a blender I'd do it in that.  It'll get you 340 calories and about 50+ grams of protein right away.  If you're using a blender you can throw in a banana or some dry oats for extra calories and good carbs (important post-workout for recovery)

> I guess you could count the odd Gatorade as well.

Drink Gatorade as little as possible.  It's almost as bad as soda for you.  If you really can't stand to drink plain water, over here we've got little flavoring pouches that you can drop in to the water that only add about 10 calories.  That's what I'd do.

> Also found this...it's a good read...http://exercise.about.com/cs/abs/a/abmyths.htm

There was a really really good article I read last week about getting a six pack.  Even though you said you don't want one, it'll be the same principles.  I'll see if I can find it.

I don't mind water, I'm fine with it. Per 100ml its 25Cal, so in a normal 600ml bottle it's 150 cal.  That's still better than a can of Coke.  But I see your point though, and trust me, it's not like I like on the things 24/7 :)

From what I understand, a lot of marketing of gatorade is that it replaces your electrolytes.  Believe me, if you're sweating enough to lose THAT many electrolytes, you're going to have other problems first.  Any energy you get would be from the sugar, if you're drinking gatorade as an energy boost, it's not going to be a very efficient one.

But...they've done RESEARCH

Seriously, though, is there anything wrong with sugar as energy, perhaps besides that it doesn't provide a lot of it? I figure you don't want to be eating energy bars or anything in the middle of playing soccer/football/whatever, but you need to drink anyways, so why not get something out of it?
Title: Re: Fitness megathread - discuss weight loss, fat loss, working out, etc here!

It's the way your body processes it.  Sugar is a good source of energy but it's not storable in that form, it gets turned into fat (which is also a great source of energy, but uses fatty acid oxidation and not glycolysis).  When you run low on glucose, your body's going to start breaking down your glycogen and fatty acids.

You don't need to have the extra glucose for what cheez is talking about really, and especially not if you're trying to lose weight.  For sprint-sports, I guess it's a different story.  I'm not so sure about soccer though.  It'll give you a boost, sure, but if you don't have any reserves left from eating healthily, you'll be running on empty.  Granted, this also takes a lot of effort to do, but it can happen.

In a nutshell, jkim is right.

Sugar is a simple carb and metabolised in a process known as "glucose metabolism", which is basically how quickly your body can deliver glucose into the bloodstream.

The primary reason for limiting your sugar is to minimise the risk of reduced insulin sensitivity which can result Type 2 diabetes. Reading up a bit on it, the WHO recommends that sugars (including those found in fruit, honey, juice etc.) should not account for more than 10% of the energy intake of a healthy diet, with carbs in total being 55%-75%. Presumably, the rest of your intake should be protein and fats.

The brain runs on the energy it gets from blood glucose in your body.  So if you don't have enough in your blood, you'll suffer physically and mentally.  You need some glucose, but not too much of it. Per 100ml of Gatorade it's 0.5g of glucose and 5.5g of sucrose.  Sucrose is table sugar, which is made up of glucose and fructose.  Sucrose is also a macronutrient which will give a rapid rise in your blood glucose levels. Hence, when drinking something akin to Gatorade, your energy levels will get a quick burst.  It is not, however, part of a balanced diet.  It's also 4 calories to 1g carb.  So if you're carb intake is 399 grams for instance -it's 4 x 399 = 1596cal.  10% of 1596 is 159.

So a bottle of Gatorade is probably going to max out your sugar intake for the day.  Eating an orange or another fruit is probably a safer bet really.  Having the odd Gatorade isn't going to damage your health as much as a can of Coke will. And I say that on the basis that Coke contains a much higher sugar content.

>> I dont know about froma  fitness point of view, but when i played football and soccer as a kid i always felt "better" when drinking gatorade as opposed to water.<<

Drinking water is the safer bet.  But in terms of it giving you more energy, Gatorade beats water hands down.  The only reason it will hydrate you quicker is simply because it tastes nice and you'll drink more of it more quickly than water.  I guess this is my justification for drinking it when doing a lot of running.  But I usuall only have it if I haven't had much water during the day or if I am really, really tired and need a boost.

When I started my new routine in March I was doing pullups with 100lb of assistance.  This morning I did 3 sets of 3 pullups with no assistance at all   Even though the rest of my workout kind of sucked I'm really happy about that.

There was a really really good article I read last week about getting a six pack.  Even though you said you don't want one, it'll be the same principles.  I'll see if I can find it.

The HIIT stuff sounds like what we do in the fall for track.  Provided a lot of variety to our workouts.

Yeah, we used to do that in cross country and track.  Usually stuff like a ladder of 100 200 400 600 800 and then back down.  Sometimes we ran hills, which is what I'd like to do, but I don't know of any hills around here.

I did 4km in 25mins yesterday.  That's about an average of 6 and half mins per km.  I'm pretty happy with that.  It was a fucking brutal course that I picked out.  The only issue with such a short distance is hitting your stride quickly.  I struggled early on because I was running uphill to start then up two flights of stairs (it's off a parkland walkway).  I'll skip the stairs today, might try to push a further distance if my body can take it.

I started this today.  I don't know if I'm going to be able to walk tomorrow, and I didn't even do the SLDLs :(

Quote
MONDAY - Legs
4 sets leg extension 10-15reps (keep it light, this is just to get blood in the legs)
4 sets squat 6-10 reps
3 sets leg press 10-12 reps
4 sets leg curl 10-12 reps
3 sets stiff legged deadlift or walking lunges (hamstring or quad, pick one and alternate every so often or whichever you think needs more work)

TUESDAY - Chest
4 sets incline DB or barbell bench 8-12 reps
3 sets flat DB or barbell bench 8-12 reps
3 sets DB fly or machine fly (pec deck) 12-15 reps, focus on squeezing at the top
2 sets weighted dips

WED OFF

THURSDAY - back
4 sets bodyweight pullups: up to 15 reps (add weight if 4x15 is too easy)
4 sets bent over row barbell or DB row 8-12 reps
3 sets front pulldown, wide or narrow (switch it up) 8-10 reps
3 sets cable row 6-10 reps
Behind the head pulldowns(yeah they're bad blah blah blah): 2 sets 15 reps Medium easy weight...just squeeze.

FRIDAY - shoulders/arms
3 sets DB press or front military 8-10 reps
3 sets side laterals 10-12 reps
3 sets rear lateral machine or DB 10-12 reps
6 sets shrugs behind the back for 3 sets and to the front for 3

3 sets reversed push down (palms facing) 8-10 reps

Biceps
3 sets barbell curl or e-z curl bar 8-12 reps
3 sets preacher machine or db/barbell 8-12 reps
2 sets hammer curl db or rope 10-15 reps
wrist curls 13-20 reps 2 sets

-Do abs on Monday and Thursday

-Do calves Tuesday and Friday.

-KEEP THE REST INTERVALS SHORT. 30-60 seconds between sets, no more. This is very important as it will fatigue the hell out of your muscles AND improve your conditioning.

-Alternate squats with deadlifts every week or two weeks if you want.

-Do your cardio normally and adjust depending on whether you're bulking or cutting.
I'm dreading Arm Day already :(

It's a bodybuilding routine, so that stands to reason.  My arms are way behind my legs anyways.  The idea isn't that I stick to this forever; it's that after doing this for 3-4 months I'll learn exactly how to listen to my body and I can do what I need to do in the gym instead of sticking to a template routine.

Also, my legs hurt this morning, but not bad.  We'll see what all day sitting down at the office does.

I haven't lifted since mid the start of July.  All my progress has fallen by the wayside.  Oh well.  I'll get back into it soon.  The thing I found that really bored/shat me to tears was having to eat so goddamn much all the time while training.  I forgot how running a few km one day and weight training the next burns through your stores.

I'm getting a 50kg (110lb) set today.  It's a steal, only $140.  Comes with a barbell and two dumbells with a half-doz spinlocks.  I don't have a bench at home but I'll worry about that later.  It's not a huge set by any means, but it'll help me to get me started again.

Well I'm going to be doing powerlifts or anything.  I want to get a good bit of definition in my arms, chest and back, I don't want a lot of actual mass per se.  I don't want to be the biggest bloke on the block.  I just want to look fit.  For the price and where I'm at, I think it was a good deal.

And why would you need a half dozen of them?  If you've only got one bar, why would you want more than two?

It's two dumbell bars plus the barbell = 2 x 2 x 2 = 6 spinlocks.  Make sense? :)

You're not going to get big if you don't eat a ton.  Even without doing any training at all, I'd wager you should be able to bench close to that 110, deadlift far above it, and squat above it.

Oh, I get it - they're not preset dumbbells, then?

Well yeah, but that's what's going to happen when you get back into a serious workout regimen when you haven't done anything recently.  It goes away quickly though.

edit: You can reduce the pain by stretching immediately after lifting and making sure you get protein after your workout.

True true.  If I outgrow them I can always keep them around for my kids when they get old enough or sell them.  I'd probably get at least what I paid for them if I keep them in good nick.  I have some whey protein mix and I've stocked up on a few cans of tuna.

I've been to the gym three times this week, the past three days inc. this morning and will go again tomorrow night.  Feels great.  Doing all cardio at the moment, about 10 mins on cycle, 10 mins on tread, 10 mins on rowing machine.  It's not a lot of time, but I don't have a lot of time right now to do much more but I have been busting it really pushing myself the whole way, no breaks in between machines.  This weekend I'm breaking out the weights.

4x10 Leg Extension 90/105/105/105
3x8 Squat 135/155/155
2x10/1x5 Leg Curl 120/110/110
2x10 Stiff Legged Deadlift 135

Kind of easing back into things

Ok, so I've got $70 I want to spend on weights or similar for those days when I work from home.  Any recommendations?  I don't really want any machines, probably just some free weights.  To be honest I don't know how much a good set usually goes for but would like as much bang for the buck as I can get so variety/versatility would be nice.

craigslist, playa

Get a bench, a barbell, and some plates and you should be good.  People sell that stuff all the time on there.  You may spend a little more than $70 for a decent set, but not much.

Damn, that's a nice deal, too bad that gym is nowhere close to where I live and in the opposite direction of where I work.  Not sure if I want to go for a whole bench setup, I was honestly just thinking of weights since theres not a whole lot of space in this little townhouse of ours, but I'll see what I can find on craigslist.  Hell if I find a good deal I could put up with having to move furniture around everytime I needed to use it.

What are you planning to do with weights and no bench?  There are things you can do, but you're so limited that it's kind of silly.

I'd see if there are any gyms close to you and look to join one.  You can usually find deals if you look around a little bit.

Believe it or not there are few gyms in Denver, I guess the assumption is that theres too much to do outside why workout inside.  Theres one next to my work that I go to, but I work from home at least once sometimes twice a week and between that and weekends just needed a small stopgap when its too miserable outside to do biking/hiking/etc.  Where I live is kind of weird, the closest gym is 10-15 mins away and is out of the way with traffic when driving home from work.  But I live 30 mins from work so don't want to go that gym either when I'm not at the office.

Plus I currently have the upper body muscle of a 80 year old grandmother, so even simple weights can give me a decent workout.

I don't know where you live, but I was able to find a few name brand (Gold's, Bally, etc) in Denver pretty easily.

You don't have to go to the gym every day, you know.  Especially if you try to just start going out of nowhere, you'll get burned out right away.

"Simple weights" are going to prove to be a waste of money when you adapt to them, which'll be pretty damn quickly.

You're probably right, maybe I'll just stick with the gym next to my work and screw getting anything for home.  And yeah where we live is on the outskirts of downtown, but all the gyms are either way smack in the middle of downtown (serious pain to get to) or out in the suburbs.

You are not heavy in your photos.  You can definately snap back.  Chin up.  Look at all the fat slobs around you and use them as motivation.  Also it just feels so good after a workout.  Plus you get a stong sense of pride that stays with you and helps you through shitty days.

I never got that much at the gym.  I usually got that towards the end of a 10 plus mile run.  Fuuuuck that.  I was always comfortable with a 6 mile run.  Felt good without busting me up.

just a note on motivation.
I heard a quote recently to the effect of: "Motivation is the result of actually doing something"

ever have a project at work you don't even want to start but when you finally get around to it you can't put it down?

funny thing about exercising is once you start doing it, you'll keep doing it (or so I'm told)

That's definitely true.  For me the problem in the past has been that something comes up (out of town for awhile, family emergency) and I just stop going for a little while to take some time off.  After that it's like "well, I'll go back tomorrow"

I haven't heard you mention doing much cardio, try doing some running, cycling and rowing machine work if you're not already doing it.  Also you're probably lumping in fitness as being just another chore, like work, cooking dinner and travelling.  It should be enjoyable first and foremost otherwise you're going to really hate doing it and you body will react to that, and you won't get the results you want.  Speaking of results, maybe you're just a bit too results driven? Unconsciously you might be thinking "Man, I'm busting my ass and I can't see a difference".

Don't weigh yourself, try not to plan it too much, mix it up.  The trouble with routines are that they are routines - they get boring very quickly.

Do something you wouldn't normally do - go rock climbing.  Go on a hiking trek.  Go biking.  Go to a batting cage.  Go to a driving range.  I know you work a lot of long and hard hours and it's not going to be easy to do this.  But one thing different every 2 weeks might help you break the boredom.

well i got an incline bench for my birthday.  haven't put it together yet, probably won't get a chance until at least sunday.  should make doing weights a bit more enjoyable.  at the moment the gyms are just jammed packed full of people (must be that $0 joining fee) and it's a struggle to get onto any machines or free's as it is.  so i'll work out a routine and post it here and have cheez pick it to pieces.

Haven't started in on the weight training yet.  I'm working about 14-15 hours tomorrow, so no chance there, have to vote on Satuday and am working another 8 hours.  So it's not going to happen anytime soon until next week.

Anyhow, last night I did 5km (about 3.1 miles) in 30 mins.  6 minutes a km, which I'm happy enough with though I would really like to get it down to an even 5.  Hope by the end of the year I'll be down to 4 minutes.

I'm surprised at how much my body can take - I should be sore today as I threw everything I had into it.  HIIT on the cycle machine is an absolute killer, I felt like I was going to spew towards the end.

7km in 44 m 30 sec.  6'30 per km.  Treadmill.  I'm happy with the distance but the speed is pretty ordinary.  I want to try to shave at least 5 mins off my time tonight.  I need to keep on a pace of at least 10-12 km/h.  I find pacing so much more harder to maintain on a treadmil.  It's far easier to do this on the road or bush track than it is on the treadmill (because there's no varation), it's just flat or on an upward angle, no way to pick up speed going downhill or to push up hills.

yeah for me, I finally have a reason to post in this thread.

So after a little coaxing from my doctor (2 years of him explaining to me, on a quarterly basis, why I'm going to die young) I've started exercising!

I had to start out slow because I'm so out of shape (I'm one of those people who can get winded walking up a couple flights of stairs) but after two weeks of nearly-everyday workouts, I'm comfortably doing 30-minutes of cardio each morning (mostly on one of those elliptical machines) and I think I'm ready to push it up a notch.  I'm just not sure what that means?

Should I just keep doing what I'm doing but for longer or more times a day? Should I start weight training and upper-body stuff?  :dunno:
My goals are not really focused on gaining muscle or strength, but mostly on losing weight and reducing my (apparently very-high) risk of cardiovascular disease.

The small gym I've been using in my apartment complex' basement has a couple treadmills, a stationary bike and the elliptical machine as well as a bunch of weight-lifting equipment, including one of those multi-bench monstrosities for leg curling and bench pressing and some other stuff that I don't really know how to use.

I have to start anything new at a slower/lighter pace but I'm motivated and, now that I've broken through the "I just can't do it" barrier, I'm ready to really do this.

Thoughts?

Good for you!

I think if you feel comfortable doing 30 minutes of cardio you should try to push yourself harder or go a little bit longer. If you have access to a pool at any point, this is also a spectacular way to exercise your entire body.

As you said, weight training shouldn't be your highest priority, but if you feel motivated, I would begin working on the large muscle groups (chest, legs, back--no bicep curls!).  Whatever you do, don't forget you need a strong core.  This means you also need to stretch and work your abs/back.

I'm supposed to be leaving now to go back to Pittsburgh, but ask away if you have any other questions.

If you've got any way to do squats or deadlifts in your gym, do them.  Muscles in your legs are the biggest in your body and improving those will go a long way towards your general health.  Deadlifts work basically everything below your pecs and squats work almost as many muscles.

I disagree with jen and think that weightlifting should be a priority for basically everyone.  If done properly and with cardio (not on the same days), it is the most effective way to lose weight (exercise wise, that is.   your diet is the single most important thing you can change to affect your weight)

I'd never done more than 4 miles in 37 minutes, and I set out to do the same yesterday.  But the iPod+Nike thing fucked up and would only do kilometers...so I had no idea exactly how far I'd gone - I was running a new route - about where I would have been at 4.3 miles, the stupid iPod said "4 km to go." So I kept going...

10k - 61 minutes.  WooooHooooo!

I played cricket last week for the first time in about 9 years and my shoulder was fucked for days from bowling so many overs.  I'm planning to do more running and start on weights soon - want to tone up, I'm stuck at about 85 kg's and I can't budge it so I think I'm about as low as I can get without resorting to starving or going on a fitness nazi diet.  My frame has changed up the last year or so, not out of any routine, but I think my body shape has changed.  I'm a lot broader across the chest.  The wife is also keen to start some yoga soon, so I'm up for that too.

woo finally have a reason to post here.

Over the past two years I've replaced muscle with fat, and three weeks ago I was at my heaviest ever! I decided to start lifting again.

This is week three, and I see big muscle gain and the strength is certainly coming back fast. I'm lifting 5 times a week - upper body only for now. Alternate workouts between chest and arms, and back and shoulders.

I precede each workout with about 10 minutes of speed bag - its a damn good warm up. Chest and arm workouts last an hour and a half and back and shoulders last an hour.

Biggest gain so far is in bench press. When I started three weeks ago I was lifting with 115lb - I'm up to lifting 205 x 10 reps comfortably. I did not try a max yet, as I don't have a spotter (I work out in my garage/pics to come soon) - but my buddy is coming over this week and I am interested in how much I can lift. At my peak, about six years ago, my max was 385.

My concentration curls have big gains too. I started with 20lbs x10 x3 and now I'm up to 35lbs x12 x3.

Let me tell you, IT FEELS GREAT. And it is nice to see my body react so well to this and transform rather fast. I think it will slow down significantly in another two weeks or so.

I don't know how much weight I lost - I don't weight my self...but my wife says I've lost quite a bit.

I have a little help by getting a boost in energy by drinking a creatine mix 45 minutes before I lift. It tastes like shit but it works (I've used it in the past and highly recommend it). Drink a lot of water though - daily recommendation is 120oz. I'll continue the creatine cycle for another three weeks.

Hopefully as the weather gets nicer I will do more cardio - biking or playing ball.

but so far so good! :)

oooh, and as far as my diet, it didn't change a whole bunch. I've made two significant changes: smaller portions, more times a day and no soda!

I eat at 7:30am, 10:30-11, 1-1:30, 4:30-5, and 10 - didn't change what I eat much - except that I try to eat more protein; still have junk food (like taco bell today) and some sweets (cut back on those too though).

I used to drink about three cans of pepsi - now I drink mostly water or juice.

Still going strong. I missed yesterday's workout (fell asleep way early) but I put in an extra half hour today. The creatine is really exposing veins in my arms and chest.

Sunday I will try maxing out on the bench press - I hope I can at least do 250.

one drawback from drinking 120+oz of water a day: you pee (wash) out a lot of minerals from your body, one of which is potassium. Two nights ago I had really bad muscle cramps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charley_horse) in both of thighs. The pain was really freakin bad - worse I've ever had it. I literally fell from the bed. That same morning I ate three bananas and we had broccoli for dinner - tonight everything was OK :)

Dang, that's quite a gain.  Good job.  If you're doing 10 reps at 205, I don't think 250 is an unreasonable goal.  The only thing I would be careful about is lifting 5 times a week, since as you start pushing more it'll get harder for your body to recover.  Even the most we do is 4 times a week.

I just came back from a basically 3 weeks off of lifting (we tapered down for two weeks and then had break) and I can tell you that front squatting 135 lbs 8x4 is not very fun after cleans.  :(
Title: Re: Fitness megathread - discuss weight loss, fat loss, working out, etc here!
Post by: Jake on March 19, 2009, 09:02:17 AM
I've kind of plateaued now. I'm trying to increase reps however, and that seems to be working.

Lifting 5 times a week is ambitious, but so far my body is reacting good to it, and as long as I recover as I have been thus far, I'll continue doing it (I think creatine helps A LOT in this aspect). I've never worked out as hard as I do now. In the past it was max 4 times a week. But I have a lot of catching up now!! I really want to get back in shape before the baby is born :)

I have to admit, as amazing as it is how quickly your body can get weak, it's even more amazing how fast your body can gain back.  Tuesday, my squats went up to 155, and I could still walk today.

Title: Re: Fitness megathread - discuss weight loss, fat loss, working out, etc here!
Post by: Jake on April 19, 2009, 03:45:38 PM
it's a creatine mix - there is a whole bunch of other stuff in it - and it is god awful.

THIS IS it (http://www.amazon.com/BSN-NO-XPLODE-Nitric-Oxide-Creatine-Servings/dp/B000JWBZUS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1240170235&sr=8-6)

I tried three flavors and they are all awful after a while. Orange was the worst. Fruit punch was okay. Lime is probably the best. One thing that helps is when water is ice cold.

Just get plain creatine monohydrate from somewhere and mix it in with cold water (yeah, doing it with warmer water is a mistake you only make once, yech).  It literally doesn't taste like anything.  You won't get the energy spike you're getting from normal creatine, though - that's why I usually have a cup of coffee or diet coke an hour or so before I go to the gym

Oh god, my legs

edit: My log for the day.  Numbers are still pretty low because I'm focusing entirely on form and still getting my muscles used to moving shit again.  My squat is embarassing

Calf Raise   3x6x90   way more weight
Squat   3x8x135   more weight
Leg Press   2x8x250   more weight
Incline Leg Press   2x8x250   more weight
Prone Leg Curl   2x8x130   good weight

Going to the gym is always embarrassing. I hate watching guys put more weight over their head 20 times than I can even lift off the ground.

In other news, I remembered how much I hate the treadmill today and decided to try out one of those stair-steppers for the first time. Took me a minute of looking like a moron before I figured it out ("why do the steps keep going to the floor!?"), and then I realized it's a lot harder than it looks

Ignore those dudes - they're probably ignoring you.  I'm just pissed because I used to be able to squat twice that not too long ago

> then I realized it's a lot harder than it looks

I tried one of those for the first time the other day.  It was weird, and yeah, harder than I expected.  I was afraid to do too much because the backs of the machines in my gym (the part you'd fall off it you fell) open up into a nice 20' fall onto the front desk.

Lifting slightly less weight for more reps increases hypertrophy, which makes muscles bigger.  Lifting heavier weight for less reps increases general strength.  I don't believe either of them are "better" for weight loss, which is mostly a function of diet.  If you're lifting at a high intensity and not eating like a retard, you'll lose weight.

The "light weight & lots of reps = weight loss" thing and "heavy weight & few reps = BULK BRO" isn't backwards, it's completely wrong.

Do you actually measure your distance in kilometres, and add increments in miles or does "K" stand for something else there?

I haven't been running in weeks...But I go climbing 2-3 times a week and hiking on the weekend (did a 15.5 mile hike with >6000ft elevation gain last weekend)

5 kilometers is a pretty standard distance for running, even over here.  That's what we ran when I did cross country in high school.

Subbed in for a softball game tonight and played like shit before it started pouring and they called the game off. It was nice to get some blood going though - my legs feel a lot better right now.

I just worked out for the first time in months and I can't do a proper overhand pullup anymore  :(

I just started jogging again in June - was immediately hobbled by shin splints, but I got new shoes and I'm doing 2.5-3 miles or so now.  I'm supposed to jog 2 miles with a kid in my neighborhood on Friday - he's probably going to go faster than me these days and I'm going to get to have some tasty humble pie....what is it about winter that makes us all depressed slackers...

I'm still intimidated by the gym, so I'm on the pushup plan - did 115 over the 5 sets the other day - which I was very happy with given how long it's been since I really tried.  Keep back at it Gov't  - I bet you can do 2 pull-ups next week!

Also I can do more than 1-2 pullups - I was trying to do them last after I had already done the rest of my workout (3x6 squats, bench, curls, good mornings) and I was pretty wiped out.  I can do probably 5-6 if it's neutral grip and 3-4 overhand

I was going deep until the last couple sets (which were normal). I find it hard to stay balanced in a deep squat unless there's some weight on it.

Don't have a video camera, and I don't think I'd be too comfortable video taping myself in the gym. I think my toes are slightly pointed out when I squat, and my legs are about shoulder width or a bit more.

Your feet should stay flat but with the weight shifted to the balls of your feet. Also make sure you aren't pointing your knees outward or something like that...

Don't have a video camera, and I don't think I'd be too comfortable video taping myself in the gym.

Had to chuckle at this....understandable though.

I think I am finally coming to the realization that I have to go see about shoulder surgery.  My right shoulder has been an issue for several years.  The socket area severely limits my any lifting that uses the (inside the socket) muscles employed during a normal flat bench press.  I have been losing ground for nearly a year, despite being patient with it and working it very lightly.

Sigh.   :( :(

These are both wrong.  Your feet should be flat, but you should be driving from your heels, not the balls of the feet.  Pointing your knees outward is perfectly fine as long as they're still in line with your toes.

Post by: Perspective on September 15, 2011, 10:10:24 AM
ewww, lifting from your heels will get your seoi-nage reversed in a second. You have better stability and forward throwing force if you keep the weight forward. (ok, my squating technique is for Judo training, but you never know when you may need to throw somebody! always be prepared!)

And the pointing knees too far outward thing was just a guess as to why he may have a groin injury from squats. Toes (and knees with them) should be slightly outward, I'd say no more than 30 degrees-ish.
Title: Re: Fitness megathread - discuss weight loss, fat loss, working out, etc here!

If you are squatting heavy weight on your toes, it will tend to bring you forward and make it more likely to lose your balance

And yeah I didn't mean you should have your toes pointing out 90 degrees or anything, but there's nothing wrong with having them pointed outwards (even more than 30 degrees) as long as you keep your knees in line with the toes.  Look at videos of powerlifters - they all point them outwards.

yeah, in Judo you want that forward motion. I guess throwing the barbell at the gym might be frowned upon.

At the gym I don't squat heavy weight so it's never been a problem for me.

No. It was mostly getting from the trailhead to the actual trail that proved to be troublesome. It obviously does not see a very high volume of foot traffic.

Now that I've run through it once (and actually figured out the name of what I ran through) I should be ok.

My toe is never going to be normal again.

In other news, I joined my brother at the gym today and ran for 45 minutes. The treadmill said I ran 2.75 miles. I hate treadmills.

Also, the past few days have marked a loss of 15 lbs from my heaviest weight 2 1/2 years ago. I'm now back to my '05 weight and below 130.
2/3 of the loss happened over the past 6 months. Probably a combination of eating less, running, and overwhelming stress of balancing work and trying to graduate in December.
It was a bit interesting throughout the process, because some people commented on the weight loss in what I felt like was less obvious stages, but I guess it all depends on what areas of the body you're losing weight in first.  Also amusing was seeing later reactions from my family during the holidays.  My dad, one morning, quite suddenly said, "Whoa, you lost a lot of weight."  Even my grandmother who typically lets me know that I should try to lose weight asked me if I was sick after seeing me recently (you can never win...).

So anyway. I just wanted to update. I'm going to watch Beauty and the Beast now.

woo finally have a reason to post here.

wow. I fell off quick that time :o I think I just got burned out real quick. Interesting how my progression was about the same as this time. BP was higher - probably because of the creatine.

But my arms are stronger, I almost started out with the set I post above; and even though I don't do concentration curls too much this time, I bet I can do the same set with more weight.

Fuck, I really need to stick with this, this time. fuck.

Having a person to go with can be a big help, especially if you have a regular schedule. Another option is to join some kind of club or program (like Mike's doing with cross-fit for example). I go to Judo twice a week for 2 hours, it's a great workout and the scheduled practices really keep me exercising regularly. If I didn't have that commitment I wouldn't work out nearly as much. I try to balance that with running and lifting when I have the time, but even when I get busy and stop the running and lifting, I always feel compelled to make the Judo classes.

I sprained my foot yesterday. Someone stepped on it with some cleats (but she still didn't grab my flag, HAH), and I was pretty sure something was fractured later in the afternoon.

So far that means I've lost my right toenail from someone stepping on my toe with cleats, sprained my right toe due to a car accident, and now sprained the top of my left foot from also getting stepped on.
On the up side, that's 0/3 in fractures! This sure does ruin the gym membership I just got though.

what do you guys listen to when you work out?

when I do cardio at the gym I either watch music videos or some history channel show. When I lift I used to listen to the "50 cent" pandora station...but now I got back to my white roots!! and lately have been listening to "system of a down" station which includes the likes of korn, slipknot, and disturbed. Bad ass. def gets me more pumped up to lift heavy weights then hip hop did.

I listen to audiobooks.

Lots and lots of them.

I know I could not do that. I use music as a motivational spring board...the harder it is the more pumped I get. But it also could be the 'roids talkin' ;)

At the gym I listen to lots of angry rap or rock.  Nonpoint, SoaD, Method Man, Wu Tang, etc.  When I run I don't listen to anything

I don't think I could if I was lifting. Not unless I had a strong routine. For running though I love it. Running is automatic enough that a book Gives me a story to zone out to. If its an especially good book, my running distances will increase just cause I don't want to stop.

Huh.  Maybe I'll give that a shot.  I've been purposely trying to get away from running with headphones because it's not allowed in lots of bigger races and it makes running on the road a little more dangerous.  The last thing I wanted to do was get up to my higher distances and gotten used to music only to not be able to run with headphones for my marathon.

I've thought about that for races, but I'm not a racer and I figure if I do, the social aspect of racing will work out in my favor.

You should totally sign up for a 5 or 10K just for the atmosphere.  If you're at all interested in running you'll love it.  There won't be any problem running with an ipod in a casual weekend race, either.

In some races, yeah. You've got tens of thousands of people jammed together, you don't need any distractions. They're almost always banned for elite runners too, to prevent coaching or other advantages.

In September I'm doing a run across the Mackinac Bridge and no music devices are allowed because the bridge stays open

The martial arts gym I go to normally is re-opening within the week so there's that.

Have a 3000 mile, over 1 year, goal for biking. (Road and off-road on a mountain bike.) Not a New Years resolution as I started on Dec 1. I am a little behind 250 miles I needed in the month of December. Need to make up ground in Jan. 25 days of 15 miles would do it plus give me a good buffer.

I am at a 14-15 mph pace now, so it takes me about an hour to go 15 miles. I have a secondary plan, call it a framework instead of a goal, to do at a minimum one hour of activity every day. Walking, biking, etc is all game.

Using mytracks and Google fit to track both.

That aside, however.... I am just trying to have fun. Have lots of fun and it seems less like excercise and more like adventures.

Landlord would consistently not pay power, water and heat bills for the building when the store owner would give him the money. So when it started to get cold and they show up to open the store one day and the power won't turn on, the water isn't running and its as cold outside as it is inside, the owner calls up the landlord, yells a bit, then over the next 30 hours proceeds to move everything out of the gym and finds another location within a week. Weirdly enough, it took them 30 hours to take all the equipment out why the hell has it taken three months to move it back into somewhere?

Commercial property leases are a bitch.  I imagine they'd need to have their insurance approve the place as well which also increases time.

Started going to the gym on 11/28/2021 - 6 days a week at night.
Set a goal: 50 pounds by the end of 2022.
Went on the all meat diet between 2/3/2022 and 4/15/2022.
Started going to the gym in the morning (5:30am) sometime in march 2022.
Started going to bed around 10pm at about the same time.
After the all meat diet I ate pretty much everything but still protein heavy
56 pounds down mid September 2022.
Kept the same weight (+/- 4 pounds) until 1/29/2023
Goal for 2023 - drop another 30
1/30/2023 went on the all meat diet again and will stay on it until 4/1
2/4 down another 6 pounds

So all meat diet is pretty much this: Meat (mostly red meat and half of that is venison), eggs, water, coffee. done.
Last year when I did it, 3 weeks in, I craved raspberries - I felt like I needed them. That was my cheat.

This time around no cravings yet.

Oh yeah, no alcohol on the no meat diet. But I do smoke the ganja when at social events :)

When off the diet, I drank 1 day a week, except for fishing week and hunting week :D

I feel great. I've put on a ton of muscle. Everything is better - not only physically but mentally too. And other aspects. I mean, everything.

Goal for 2024, drop 15 pounds to reach my target weight of 235.

oh yeah #2 - sauna 3x week for 20-25 mins. wonderful

I definitely relate to that. When I'm hitting the gym regularly I feel 100x better all around. Physically better, less tired, more energy... but also mentally better, happier, more patient with the kids

Not too sure about the meat diet though... I get the benefits for weight loss and muscle gain, but I'd be a little worried about other long term effects that could have. Glad to hear it's working for you though, might be worth consulting with a dietician or physician on what's best for you. When I was serious about muscle gain I followed macros. I ate everything but tried for a specific ratio of protein, carbs, and fat. I've always stayed away from extreme anything... rather, everything in moderation. I gained around 25 lbs (my goal was +20) and put on a lot of muscle.
