Title: guess how old
Post by: Jake on November 15, 2009, 10:30:04 PM
braught this slab, along with 5 others home the other day. Not sure what type of tree it is; it fell on my buddies house :( he wasn't in at the time. I think it weights ~700-800 pounds - my friend (who is about the same size as me) and I we could not pick it up and had to use some Polish ingenuity to first load it on the truck, and then unload it :p.

I'm planning to let it dry out for about 6 months and then make two large coffee tables from it - for sale of course. Any takers ;)

How old do you guys think it is? I counted the rings and my guess was off by a decade.

I'm not going to bother to blow that up and count them, so a rough guess says 95 years.

Interesting, it looks like it started as two sprouts and they merged with the left one being about 2 years older.

I'm gonna go with 112

And if I had a house, I'd be all about the table.  What you going to seal it with?

I get the reference to the number and why you'd want to get it out of the house... i just don't get where he came up with that number... unless it was just a bad joke.  ;)

Charlie was the closest - I counted 64 rings.

yup, that is why I think it appears older than it really is.

Anyone have any idea how to check what kind of wood this is? all the leafs were gone already, so I have no idea how to check what this really is...maybe by the bark?

The bark can hint to the type, so can the smell/scent

I still am supposed to do it for guessing the baby info closest. I planned on making one but have been real busy lately. One of these days I'll get to it, I promise. :)

BTW, my dad told me what tree this is: honey locust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_locust). Very interesting tree. The streets in my neighborhood are lined with them and I never knew its name - weird.
