Title: Lunch
Post by: Mike on April 17, 2011, 07:05:54 PM
Working on eating right and I've gotten breakfast under control, dinner is coming around but lunch is still a fucking mess.

I can't really do sandwiches more then a couple of times before I get bored of it.  Plus by the time lunch rolls around I'm not in the mood to make a sandwich.

So I need your lunch ideas.

Lately when I bring my lunch it's been really simple.

Here's what I've got for tomorrow
8oz turkey breast
2C broccoli
1oz almonds
1C greek yogurt mixed with raspberries and whey protein

Salad.
Something realistic.

Taste wise how does greek yogurt compare to the flavored yogurts?  I don't dislike it but it isn't my favorite thing to eat

Flavored greek yogurt tastes a lot like regular yogurt.  Unflavored it's a little "sharper", I guess?  The biggest difference is that the consistency is a lot more like sour cream.

Trader Joe's is great for simple lunches that can be really good for you - their buffalo chicken meatballs are great as well as the sliced chicken and turkey breasts.

Mike, why isn't salad realistic?  But a few ingredients and throw them together.  I can throw together a salad just as fast as I can throw together a sandwich in the morning.
Title: Re: Lunch

Cause it's salad.  Salad goes with a meal.  It isn't a meal :D

I totally disagree.  A little cheese, the right dressing, some meat (I prefer ground turkey or ground red meat.. but chicken is good as well), some veggies... and top it with some Texas Toast Chili Lime Strips.  And you've got yourself a fantastic meal.

I love me some salad.

i eat a salad every day for lunch.  it might seem boring, but it's simple to make and satisfying.  i usually mix in the leftover protein from the previous dinner or canned fish.

berries, nuts (usually macadamia), avacado, seeds, red onion, etc are regular components.  i don't eat much dairy at all so i steer clear of the cheese, etc

I just order a bento box to be delivered to the office.  Today was "chicken fried rice" which is usually plain fried rice with "fried" chicken (pan fried) on top of it with a vegetable (green beans this time) and a few pickles.  It was GOOD.  And only ¥500 (about $6).

Meh...salad.  Though I do enjoy the Ruby Tuesday salad bar.  Olive Garden salads are decent also.

+1 (unless they don't have the pumpernickel croutons)
Title: Re: Lunch

I had Ruby Tuesday's salad bar this weekend and it didn't seem any different than any other buffet salad bar to me.
Title: Re: Lunch

because you probably didn't have the honey french dressing or you skipped the croutons (unless they were too stale)

Post by: Govtcheez on April 18, 2011, 12:52:45 PM
I can't eat either of those things :(

It looked a little nicer than something at Old Country Buffet, but it's not like there were crab legs out or something.

Can't eat it because of diet/choice or because of a food allergy or something?  Just curious.

I have to say out of all of the salad buffets I've been to, Ruby Tuesday has been the best for some reason.

I'm on a low carb diet so croutons and sweet salad dressings are a no-go.  My salad there on Saturday was lettuce, some cheese, ham, bacon, eggs, and ranch dressing.

Shit... this thread reminded me that I left my lunch in my other car.

(Two PB&Js on wheat, a banana and something else. I'd have to buy something additional from the lunch truck even if I had that, though, since it's not enough.)

P.S. Sammiches never get boring.

Think I'll get sushi today

That doesn't seem like a lot to me? (just a lot of sugar, but I see everything as a lot of sugar nowadays)
Title: Re: Lunch
Post by: charlie on April 18, 2011, 03:00:06 PM
The something else was applesauce, so yeah, a lot of sugar and a lot of carbs. When my wife makes my lunch it's usually less fruit more veggies and nuts, but I'm not paying too much attention to my diet at the moment.

And I get really hungry at the office. Probably all the diet soda I drink.

Have you tried grazing through the day?

That's what I do... eat one sammich @ 11, one @ 11:45, some pretzels or nuts @ 12:30, fruit @ 1:30, veggies @ 2:00, sunflower seeds @ 4.

I just went to quizno's to replace my missing lunch. Small ultimate turkey club on wheat, chicken bacon ranch sammie, and honey mustard chicken small chopped salad. Haven't eaten the sandwhich yet but the other two disappeared quickly.

Quizno's is OK but if I want a sub other than subway, I'm going to jimmy johns.

Finally found a lunch template that works for me:
Using the lettuce making rolls out of the meat, avocado, bell pepper, and tomato.  Rest just eat as finger food.  I'm really enjoying it.  The bell peppers have a great crunch and require some chewing.  It also feeds my nibbling enjoyment.

There's a site I think would be perfect for you Mike. You put in your calories, macros, and some foods and it makes a meal plan and grocery list for you. When I can find it I'll post it

Not bad.  I like that it has presets for different types of meal plans.  Their calorie calculator put me at 2880 calories for weight loss which is probably 800-1000 calories more than I'm eating now.

Does it have more food items if you sign up?  I'm finding the lack of specific items kinda annoying.  Plus under salmons it is in units of fillet.  I don't buy salmon in fillet units, I buy (and measure it) by weight.

Does this day (http://swole.me/?sandbox=1&calories=1220.8&num_meals=3&carb_perc=10&fat_perc=50&protein_perc=40&big_bfast=0&pwo_meal=0&no_carb_last_meal=0&breakfast_enabled=1&num_veggies=5&check_foods=4181%2C4172%2C5358%2C1357%2C1536%2C668%2C1170%2C6589%2C5070%2C6538%2C1308%2C2698%2C6799&bfast_foods=2753%2C2619%2C2700%2C2706%2C2173%2C6897%2C6892%2C6799&ml1=0&ul1=6897*0.5%2C566*0.125%2C668*0.25%2C1265*0.25%2C1931*0.875%2C2698*0.5%2C1057*0.25%2C7382*1%2C1536*0.25&l1=&ml2=0&ul2=668*0.5%2C1265*0.25%2C7041*0.6666666666666666%2C1931*0.3&l2=&ml3=0&ul3=5070*1%2C2698*0.5%2C1265*0.25%2C1931*1%2C566*0.125%2C1057*0.25%2C7382*1%2C1536*0.25&l3=) seem to match
Quote
Breakfast @ 8:45: 1 egg, 1 1/2 cup salad w/ 1/2 avocado, 1/4 tomato.  Dressing: 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Lunch @ 1:30: 1/4 red & orange bell pepper, 1/4 tomato, sliced turkey breast, lettuce

Dinner @ 5:45: 4.4oz salmon fillet, 1 1/4 cup salad w/ 1/2 avocado, 1/4 tomato.  Dressing: 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp vinegar, mustard

???  :dunno:

One of the problems I find is that my salads are created like this:
Grab lettuce, chop it up, put in storage bowl.  Add various veggies (carrots, green onions, zucchini), add cabbage (red cabbage really enhances the salads), then mix up.  Grab about a cup up and put into salad bowl and add tomato and avocado and any dressing (usually just olive oil and balsamic vinegar).  There is generally no measuring of individual ingredients so it is a pain to recreate it on sites.

I will say that site is heads and tails above most so thanks for linking it :D  If nothing else it looks like I'm in the ball park of where I want to be.  Might need to add some more protein.

You're doing Crossfit and you're eating only 2000 calories (or less) a day?

I'm no expert, but everything I've heard is that that is a recipe for gaining even more weight back down the line. Your dietitian put you on that plan, right?

Post by: Mike on March 06, 2012, 09:11:33 PM
I'm not on a "plan".  If fact we aren't even measuring calories.  With some exceptions (i.e. I didn't do it on some days) my food journal is here: http://www.mikemill.org/wordpress/?cat=4

I'm not constantly hungry, I'm not getting the shakes, and I have energy for the workout.  So I'm not planning on adding more food/calories to my meals just to get some number.  Well, as long as I can still perform.

That said, I think I'll try to keep a more exacting log the next few days so I can get a better idea.

So I emailed the trainers and they responded that they thought it was too little.  Before making any changes I'm going to spend a few days being more exacting in my measurements.  Maybe it is the engineer in me but I can't see making any changes before knowing if the data is right.  Maybe that day wasn't as typical as I thought.
