Blackberry DM + Linux
« on: September 14, 2008, 11:13:23 PM »
Google is kicking me alot of scattered info on this one. So far i am loving Ubuntu and google has answered 90% of my questions and u guys are more then helpful. Anyway i need the blackberry DM (v4.5) for my phone. I dont know how it will run in wine (or where to start to do it) so im trying to find a linux version.

Any of you guys with a BB running linux shed some insight?

Verizon is supposedly renaming it for their release. (along with stripping out everything cool I'm sure)

You know it makes sense. RIM really kills with ATT and Sprint, but mostly ATT. With the iphone being so popular, it makes sense thatb RIM would allow it to be renamed for verizon. Verizon tends to piss off its customers by limiting phone capability, like you said, and im sure they dont want that bs associated with the whole line of a new release.

Yup...

Quote
sudo apt-get install wine

Then wine has it's own installer to install windows progs or you can use wine as a command line to run exe's.

sweet. wine installed easy and i can see just by choosing the exe to download that wine already knows to open it.

Summary:

The BB Desktop Manager will not run in linux, its just not going to happen. And RIM has no released any hope of a linux client to date. There are ways to sync the blackberry in linux, one of them being "Barry", but it is a royal PITA.

My solution is to run the BB software on XP through VirtualBox
