Yeah, a lot of 90s games were just getting comfortable with 3D graphics when the technology was in its infancy.  As a result, a lot of them look like crap now.

BTW I still play Total Annihilation now and again.  It has aged well and can still be a challenge to play.  I have access to an updated executable that adds units and tweaks the AI if anyone is interested.  I can link it to you via Dropbox.  You may need a play disc.  I guess I could create an ISO for it....  TAUIP Total Annihilation Unit Interdependency Pack

Yeah it came out about 6 months before SC.  It never had a huge following, but it got very good reviews and had a solid core of people that loved it (evidenced by knuck still playing it)

StarCraft


Kind of a no-brainer for me, I'm just glad it lasted this long. StarCraft was the last game I actually played a lot and invested a lot of time in. Fun, difficult, interesting, replayable, there were lots of reasons I'd choose it number 1.
