You need to get a grinder and grind from beans. It tastes way better than pre-ground coffee and you can the consistency you need for your brewing method of choice. It's been a long time since I've had percolated coffee, it's usually French Freedom press instead.

Try to make sure you flush the grinder between grinds.  Stale leftovers or a different bean (still stale) can ruin the grind.

I just percolated my first coffee, it was quite good. not quite Italy but reminiscent of it   $10 well spent.

I found the same thing after coming back from Portugal, they make the best espressos I've ever tasted (if you ever go there ask for un café).  And it only cost 60 Euro cents.  Even with conversion you're paying about $1.  I console myself these days with Naked Coffee, who probably do the best coffee you can buy in Australia.
