servers, e-mail and mozilla...
« on: April 14, 2006, 05:57:00 AM »
Hi again guys,
busy as usual and with new questions / problems.

I'm trying to buy a new server for the office. I'm probably going for a Dell PowerEdgeTM  830 (I want to spend no more than a thousand euros). About the OS, I've been thinking about SuSe and Windows 2003 Server... but (be nice to me) I'm just staying with Windows XP Pro. I just don't have time to learn Linux at the moment, and I don't want to spend so much money on a Microsoft Server OS when I don't really need it.

So, now the problem comes with the e-mails. We're very very happy with Thunderbird, and want to keep it. At the moment I'm just using IMAP, but we don't have much space left at the server (the provider one I mean). I want to get some kind of mail server running on the new PowerEdge so that all the e-mails are stored locally and all the clients have access to them, simultanously (damn, how do you spell this in English?).

Now, who's the pretty boy who's going to help me with this one? What solutions should I be looking at? I've been googling for ages, but I guess my knowledge when it comes to servers and so on isn't just good enough  :(

That's it. I'd appreciate any help!!! a lot!!!!

Windows 2003 Server would be nice, if you can get it.  But I guess you can get by with XP Pro.  And if you're really going to get into full-blown email server/client stuff, you should really probably consider something like Outlook and Exchange server.  Postcastserver (http://www.postcastserver.com/) has always been my favorite otherwise, but Exchange would give you the ability to expand your capabilities beyond just mail.
