Creating single image gallery from folder
« on: August 23, 2007, 11:35:02 AM »
I've got a folder of icons that I frequently browse through to find the right icon to include in my projects. I'd like to make a single jpeg or png that has them all in one file. It can be somewhat large.
Basically, I'd like to be able to screengrab the explorer view in icon mode and see all the icons collapse on like a preview page.

Anyone ever see any software to do that?

Like an icon sheet image.

I think he means like a thumbnail page.  Doesn't ACDSee and the like do that sort of thing?  I suppose there might be a freeware utility or two that does that sort of thing.

There are like a 1000 icons though so I'd have to print screen many many times and stitch them all together. It could seriously take me like an hour or more.

:horror:

I'm lazy. I need a tool.

Image Magic (a sweet set of command line tools for image manipulation found on most linux and mac boxes) has tools for this sort of thing.

I think the tool you'd be looking for is called combine. You could then mogrify the image to play with it's size.

as a side note, mogrify is great for resizing a directory full of images, something like mogrify -resize %50 *.jpg or mogrify -resize 800x600 *.jpg. Makes email sizing lots of photos really easy.

I think that might work.

Good tool for the other features too. That would work well for making thumbnails and stuff too.
