Title: CRT Deadage
Post by: ahluka on September 22, 2008, 02:38:25 PM
And because my usual CRT is now dead, my backup one, a shitty SHITTY piece of shit 15" shitblock uncapable of anything better than 1024x768@60 is about to give me a skull-numbing headache courtesy of eye strain.

So now I need a job for another reason, y'know, besides chronic boredom and lack of money. Today started out so good as well.

</rant>

Anyway, I turned it on this morning and instead of working, like it was last night and has been for the last ~5 years, I get a corrupted rolling screen with "signal out of range" in nice big letters. From what I can tell, it's just completely fucked and adding to the list of things lately that are driving me slowly in-fucking-sane.

I restarted my PC, switched the monitor on and off, hit keys, moved mice, opened my PC and checked everything's dandy with my graphics card, tried another monitor (before the one I'm currently using) which worked fine.

Interestingly enough, the monitor I just declared "completely fucked" works on my brother's PC... eventually. Actually he just moved his mouse and wahey, wonderful colours. I'm not as surprised at this as I could've been - my monitor and GPU have had hissy fits / disagreements in the past, but only when switching screen resolution (in a game mostly) back to 1280x960@72.

Le sigh. Just thought I'd share. I lied earlier by the way, today has been bad news since minute one.

1) Power the monitor to full
2) Open up the case
3) Locate the capacitor
4) Locate an uninsulated screwdriver
5) Use said screwdriver to discharge the cap.  Make sure to hold on to the screwdriver for dear life.

If it doesn't work try standing barefoot in a puddle of water.

Now mike, you know better.

When you stand in the water you should still be trying to fix the monitor. Otherwise, your feet just get wet.

Sorry, I meant stand in water while doing steps 1-5 again.  And if that doesn't work you try salt water.

Right. So someone else is buying it. One would think there are things you could use more then a monitor.

I don't think he has any bills, he lives with his parents IIRC. Tis the time to spend all your money on toys, once you live on your own it gets hard to do that.

Eh if you spend all your money on toys instead of preparing for th future you end up selling toys to pay the rent.
