I think the recent advances in communication dictacte that technology like that will be commonplace by 2010, or maybe even before then.

That seems really fast now, but think, by 2010 the computing world will be used to those speeds. We'll be beaming each other to different countries instead of using planes in the decades to come.

I have a feeling that wireless services will be more popular than fiber over the next few years.  A lot of companies (including verizon) are throwing up hotspots in major cities.

Yeah, but aren't wireless services generall less secure than fibre connections? I mean, who would want to send personal information over the internet is the guy nextdoor could easily crack the code?

With WEP encription I wouldn't worry about it too much...chances are the guy next door couldn't be able to break it...wouldn't count on it for sending details of my plan to conquer the world though.

Think larger... these kinds of speed are not meant to support end users.  Practical wireless cannot reach from here to Australia/England/etc at those rates.  This is a backbone technology...

I understand that... and I know that backbones are always going to be hardwired.  I was thinking end-user, which I was pretty sure what the article was referring to.

"which is more than 100 times faster than inter-city data transmissions currently in use"

What gives you that idea? (inter not inner)

Cisco is currently demo'ing terabit switches, we may even be able to get one to come out to the LAN we're holding this winter (I know a guy who knows a rep.). So the technology is coming faster than we think. 2 years ago people thought the same thing about gigabit networks, they're becoming very mainstream now.
