I need a new podcast
« on: March 18, 2010, 12:34:09 PM »
I'm looking for a new free podcast to listen to.  I really enjoy the story-telling podcasts (RISK! and The Moth) or educational type podcasts (anything from howstuffworks.com) or anything with comedy/stand-up.

Suggestions?

I do NOT like the radio-show format where a few people sit around and discuss multiple topics like a normal radio show.  I've tried a few of those and I'm just not a fan.  If I want to listen to something like that, I'll turn on the radio.

I'm not opposed to other genres either... the above are just ones that I've found and enjoyed.

Podcasts I listen to

Stuff you should know (from howtuffworks)
Wait Wait Don't tell me (comedy/news thing from NPR)
Democracy Now (news)

Someone recommended "Uh Yeah Dude" as the best comedy podcast out there but I  don't really like it.

I would kill for a good sports podcast, especially a baseball one

These are the ones I listen to regularly:

Stuff you should know (from howstuffworks)
Stuff you missed in History Class (from howstuffworks)
Wait Wait Don't tell me (comedy/news thing from NPR)
The Totally Rad Show (movies, video games)
Skeptics Guide to the Universe (science news, but falls into your Radio dislike criteria above)

ROFL has decent standup comedy, but its pretty short, maybe a minute or two for 7-8 comedians back to back.  Kind of hit or miss though.

I have yet to find a single sports podcast that I like, the only decent ones are always a couple days behind on what I already know is going on in sports by the time they publish.

i forgot about this one.  It's great, but they don't have new episodes often enough

If you are a new listener, like me, they have a ton of great back episodes.

I might check those out.

I actually get their videocasts pushed straight to my Tivo.  It's not great, but they have a couple good ones from time to time.

I've tried these and I find them so goddamn boring.  :(

What is the radio lab one about?

Radiolab is a kind of typical NPR weekend program.  They pick a topic and just talk about it for the length of the show (I think it's an hour).  The way it's put together and edited it pretty cool, though.  I haven't listened to it enough to describe it, but it's a good show.

Besides several that have already been mentioned:

Keith and the Girl (standup/comedy - more discussion thereof and a taste of the culture, not actual performances)
Naked Scientists from the BBC is great - similar to Skeptics Guide but I like it more - feels more professional
Planet Money is spectacular - NPR (easy to understand economics)
This American Life

Yea - off my list if there's one I think everyone should try it's Planet Money...I'm a little ashamed I've never posed on here suggesting it before.  Great show.  So clearly explains things...if you want to understand the economics behind anything in the world in the last 2 years - just start working through the back catalouge...they walk you from why the economic crisis happened in great easy to understand details, what the economic problems problems with healthcare are, what the effects of various healthcare/stimulus plans might be according to various economic views, to the understanding of the economic problems of Haiti and Greece are (besides the earthquake).

The got their start with a couple of This American Life episodes wherein they explained the financial crisis....

Really great, almost scientific, unbiased approach.  Love it.

The newest Stuff You Should Know is about Vikings.  Vikings rule.  Therefore, Stuff You Should Know rules.

SYSK is by far my favorite podcast, followed closely by RISK! and The Moth.

Tech Stuff is another good one from howstuffworks and The Coolest Stuff on the Planet is a nice quick look at cool places/stuff around the world.  Oh, and Brainstuff.  Howstuffworks dominates my podcast list, basically.
