A full working calculator right in the search results! And of course it works with the keyboard too!

Haha that is pretty cool. Google is one of those companies that surrounds itself with idea makers. They knew early on that simple things really grab people. Other companies may have said eh who would use that and Google says hmm, offer it to them.

I agree with you ober, google is pretty amazing. But pretty scary too. If you think about how many things in our life depend on a single company.....

Rich search results are the future of Web search. Google is doing some interesting things with their "knowledge graph" too, for example answering queries with entities (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp=les%3B&gs_nf=1&gs_id=7u&xhr=t&q=author+of+moby+dick&pf=p&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&oq=author+of+mo&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=88e105b250c3d37d&biw=1276&bih=691) instead of only "ten blue links"
Also lists of entities (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=rock+bands&oq=rock+bands&gs_l=serp.3..0l4.11943.13284.0.13321.10.6.0.1.1.1.549.1154.1j4j5-1.6.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.kfGVk7zj3SY&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=88e105b250c3d37d&biw=1276&bih=691) for really simple queries.

This is true throughout life though. Through history somebody has always had at least one thing their company dominated in and locked on. The problem with the internet age is the ease of which things are created and the scary obsession that people have for these often simplistic things.
