I wouldn't imagine you would be upgrading as soon as it comes out. For a server is it not better to wait at least six months and let others be the test bunny?

Same here... although we got a request for Windows 8 support earlier than usual so we started testing on that already.

Because our stuff only runs on Windows and it would take a long time to get it to run on other platforms but we don't have many customers who actually need it to.

Why does it only run on Windows?  I promise I'm not trolling, I'm truly interested.

Well...

Our server software only runs on Windows because even though we designed the bulk of it to be platform-less-dependent, we ended up using some existing libraries in the company for database connectivity which rely on ODBC drivers and were designed with Windows specific code. The server could probably be ported to Unix/Linux, but we haven't had the motivation to try.

Our client software was built on MFC, so unless we do a full rewrite that's not going to move. (And we did start a rewrite at one point in Java but that got scrapped because it was taking too long and wasn't able to handle the size of the datasets we need to handle.)

Mike we don't make the software; we have to work with it. This software is made by huge vendors like NCR and Micros.

Steve - we will not be using 2012 for another 2 years...if that. Like I said, it was justported to 2008 and 7 last year. We were still putting out 2003 installations middle of 2011.

Ok that makes sense, I took from the OP that you just got updated to those and now need to try and update to 2012 with its pending release.
