Reverse Dual Boot
« on: March 05, 2011, 07:10:01 PM »
I'm well versed in installing Ubuntu and Windows side by side, but usually i have Windows installed already. I have a "need" for W7 because i want music on my HD7 and Virtualbox cant get it done.

How can i install W7, then fix Grub2 so that i can choose between the two? I need to leave my Ubuntu in tact. I knew some about grub, but grub 2 is a whole new animal.

To add an existing partition to the grub menu you can use grub-mkconfig (http://members.iinet.net/~herman546/p20/GRUB2%20Bash%20Commands.html#grub-mkconfig) - backup your existing grub.cfg first!

The problem is that vista will overwrite the boot sector of the disk when you install it so you need to reinstall it. A quick search gave this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows) and I'd advise you read through it all and backup everything first

Sweet man that's the thread I couldn't find. I have everything backed up through Ubuntu One so I'm going to read through that and give it a go.

Thanks

You could also use vmware if you can find a copy of it.

took about 3 seconds to find a full copy of it. Took a quick gander at the website and got the download (linux) going, but i'm not entirely sure what it is? It talks about Windows 7 Migration, but i want a side by side not a migration. I'll have to read more later.

Its a virtual machine. It pretends to be hardware and you can install operating systems on it. Then windows just runs like an app inside linux.
