Does anyone know how to setup an FTP server? I'm running Fedora Core 4 and AFAIK I need vsftpd (which I've got) and *?*. Do I need to buy a domain name first?

You don't need a domain name to setup an FTP server.  People just need the IP address, username, and password.

and port if you use a non-standard port : ) If you have DSL or your IP changes frequently you may want something like http://www.no-ip.com

Well you're welcome to try and ftp in now:

IP: 86.139.41.223
Username: anonymous
Password: anonymous (?)

I actually have no clue what the password is but whenever I anon into a server the password is anonymous, so...

I'm using proftpd and it seems to be setup fine (I followed a Debian tut).

didnt find it, make sure if theres a router present you are port forwarding. Also, if you set it up as anonymous access there is no need to specify a username and password. With IE and Opera, anonymous access is always attempted first unless the user issues a user and pass in the address. And in all ftp client programs you have "Normal, anonymous, and registered" (or to that affect).

If you dont want anyone to be able to access it, create a user/pass and turn off anonymous access.

Hmm I have a router but no idea if I'm port forwarding or not.

What router?  Most of them have an internal webserver at 192.168.1.1 (you should be able to find the port forwarding options in the settings page from there).

Its a BT Voyager 205 - I'll check the settings now.

*edit*

Hmm there's nothing there about IP forwarding, Is there another name for it? I saw IPoA and EoA and some other things.

EDIT: just choose "FTP" as your program.

Thanks :)
Now it's all setup I'll restart vsftpd and see if it works.

*edit*

Well 'ftp localhost' works fine, but if i type my ip it doesn't, and apparently it doesn't work for a friend of mine either.
