Anybody have recommendations or thoughts on free software that will allow me to write quick notes and leave them on my desktop as reminders? The simpler the better.

if you use ms Office, Outlook has sticky notes that'll show on your desktop.  the next time you reopen outlook though, they won't show up, you'll have to open them up all over again.

Yahoo Widgets has a pretty handy "sticky note" widget.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm trying out the Outlook notes. I don't like that it shows up on the taskbar, but otherwise it seems ok for now.
