Title: Wii thread
Post by: Govtcheez on November 19, 2006, 09:19:09 AM
I know ethic was gonna get one, so this is a thread where he and I can talk about stuff.  I was #15 out of 23 at Circuit City this morning.  I got there right about 8, and they handed out tickets at 9.  Probably gonna pick up Zelda and Red Steel along with another controller when they open at 10.  Right now, I'm just going to enjoy being warm, because I just stood in 35 degree weather for an hour for a fucking video game system

I'm confused.  Where are/were you posting from?  And since ethics being cheap, you must tell us how it is.

Wow, I heard about people lining up at the beginning to middle of the week for the PS3, I kinda thought it'd be similar for the Wii.

They handed out the tickets at 9, but the store didn't open until 10, so I came home.  The girlfriend and I have been playing Wii Sports for the last hour and a half - it's a lot of fun so far.  They really utilize the controllers in neat ways for some of these.  To box, you hold your hands up and actually punch and dodge and stuff.  In Golf, you actually swing the controller like a club.  So far I think our favorite game is tennis.  We also bought Zelda and Red Steel.  I've heard mixed things about Red Steel, but I'm sure Zelda's great.

One thing I noticed is that most stores are really really undersupplied on the controller.  You really need the nunchuck and wiimote to be able to play effectively, but when we went to Circuit City, they only had like 4 of each.  Fortunately, we got an extra one so we can play together, but I know some people got left out.

Mike, I heard about some people being there last night or yesterday, but that was mostly for places that had midnight launches.  The earliest I heard of anyone getting to stores today was like 5.  The Wii didn't have the demand of the PS3, and Nintendo supplied a lot more of them, especially in the US.

Ah ok, that'd explain it.  Sony bastards!

I was up at midnight last night working on a paper, so I checked Amazon, but it wasn't available...Then I went to bed. I still want to get one before the new year, anyone have any idea how hard that will be?

I hate console launches

I think there are going to be new shipments in every week.

I think amazon did their sale at like noon eastern, but it went really really fast.

Super Monkey Ball sucks so far.

I think I'm the only person with that opinion.

The control on Red Steel was a little rough, but I think that'll go away after I play it a little more.  I haven't played it since last Sunday.

The control on Monkey Ball seems broken.  It keeps not detecting the remote, even when it should be right there.

Controls are great on Wii Sports, Zelda, and the menus.  I wish that Zelda had been a Wii-only game, though; it seems like they didn't utilize it as much as they could have.  You can gesture with the remote to attack or use it to select menu items, but that's it.

hey wii owners, anyone try the virtual console yet? can you play all the old school games or what? I'm pretty close to buying one but trying to talk myself out of it.

I haven't because there aren't really any games on there that grab me.  I've got all the SNES and NES games on my computer, so I don't forsee me using that all that much.  I am planning on getting Tecmo Bowl when it comes out on the VC, but that's probably not for awhile.  I have heard a lot of people really enjoy the VC, though, especially on the older systems.

I'm really looking forward to the other channels they'll have on there.  Opera should be coming out for the Wii this month, and they'll have the news and weather stuff on there shortly, too.

After looking at the games and stuff available, I think I'm going to hold off and put the money into my MAME arcade. I swear someday I'll get it done.

I have a friend with one of those. It's an old NeoGeo, runs linux with over a thousand game images. Crazy fun

I'm still waiting for them to release the LAN Adapter :(

I don't get why the hell people are clamoring for a wired adapter.  The thing's going to cost as much as a wireless router anyways.

Because, my furry friend, wireless sux. At least, British wireless does.
Thankfully I don't have to endure it myself, and I laugh at my mates who flicker on and off of MSN, each time following up with "fucking wireless!".

It will be a pain to have to keep swapping the LAN cable between my PC and Wii, though.

Another good reason to get a router (wireless or no--not to mention that wireless routers have wired ports). I've never had a major problem with wireless  :dunno:

What makes British wireless suck?  I know it's all foggy and shit over there, but it's not like the wireless router affects your internet connection in any way.

I bowled a 231 this afternoon :)

I'll post my number a little later, JaWib.

My wireless is fine, except I have to reset my router like once a week. I can do that over the ether too, so to speak.

There I said it.

BUT! I'm getting the next lump of my student loan *soon*.

I have to say the Wii does sound promising and does have me very tempted.

Is it possible to hook it up to a computer monitor instead of a tv?  My computer monitor(s) are actually larger then my tv :P

More to the point: Is it possible to play it *without* looking like a spaz?

Yeah, definitely.  You have to move around a little bit, but you don't have to look like the morons in the commercials.

Also, I got Opera for Wii today - it works well :)

Probably not.  Unless you're ridiculously obese and play the system like a spaz, it's not going to do anything.

I have to get back to that. I think I'm only about a third of the way through. What happens after you finish? Do you start over in a different world like the old school Zelda or is it just thanks for playing now go sell this game?
