Title: Oblivion
Post by: KnuckleBuckett on May 30, 2007, 07:46:26 AM
PC version...

I am at level 30 now.  I have yet to start the main mission.  I think in the next level or two I will work on solving the main mission.  I keep getting into these mini-missions that are so fun that I just never get to the main story.

An amazing game.  I would give it a 9.5/10.

Beautiful graphics.  Immaginative missions that constantly innovate and keep the game from getting boring or repetitive.  They also have a HUGE set of "dungeons" that are good for simple run and gun tactics for when you wanna just hack and burn (or zap or freeze or...).  Also the missions are well organized and designed to lead from one to the next.  Decent sense of humor, good characcter interface, and conversations that mirror events that you usually have a hand in causing.  Great writing.

Save and load times are short and easy.  Save often.  Then.  Save more often.

Great at the patented Far Cry make you jump because something sneaked up on you.  Arrrrhhhh!

Re-playability has got to be near infinite.

PS3 version rocks too.

Negatives?

It takes a bit to get used to the in game motion.  I dunno why.  It may have just been me.  The movement is the same as BF2 but I just found it a little odd feeling.  Maybe because the world is so well developed in comparison.

On occasion you get to a point in a mission that you are like WTF?  These points are rare enough though and often included for good reason (you just don't see it at the time).

"Dungeon" maps could be better.  I get lost sometimes and it annoys the shit outta me.

I understand that the XBox version sucks to play.

That's about it.

Anyone else?

> Save and load times are short and easy.  Save often.  Then.  Save more often.

I've probably saved 500 times in my current game :)  It's just so easy to quicksave that there's no reason not to.  Plus it helps me when the game crashes every hour or so

> On occasion you get to a point in a mission that you are like WTF?  These points are rare enough though and often included for good reason (you just don't see it at the time).

Usually just following the indicator on the compass makes things pretty obvious to me

> "Dungeon" maps could be better.  I get lost sometimes and it annoys the shit outta me.

Pick an uncompleted quest and bam, the compass will point back to the exit

You forgot the biggest pro: NO CLIFF RACERS

Also the biggest con: Scaled enemies

I completed the main quest at about level 8 by becoming King Shit of the Mage's Guild and making a spell that drains health 100pts for 1 second. That's enough to kill 99% of the guys in the game, and for some reason it's ridiculously cheap mana-wise.

After you beat the main quest (which is awesome, btw), pick up Shivering Isles.  It's a really neat quest and I'm enjoying it much more than the original quest.  Make sure you download the latest patch though, or you'll run into a pretty huge bug (any newly created item will disappear if you reload a saved game or drop it.  This applies to stuff you create yourself as well as items you have just never picked up before, like quest items)

I'll give it a 9/10.  I don't know if I like it more than Morrowind, but it's damn close.

You know, now that I've updated my system I should really give it another whirl.  My biggest beef with it was how slow it made my system.

If you turn down the detail a little (especially the grass), it helps a ton.

I do have slowdowns but they are in very limited areas and pretty rare.  They have never lasted long and have yet to annoy me.

My system is a P4-478-3.4GHz, 2GB DDR, 6800 series 256MB Nvidia.  Intel 875 (not PCIx) mobo.  X-fi audio.  By todays standards an old system.

Thanks for the advice.  I should become king shit in the mages guild as well.  I have a nasty electrocution spell and a fireball spell that can be nasty.

I find that running and jumping to the high spots (where most nasties can't reach you- much) and frying them at my leisure is the best way to survive.  I sneak alot also.

My favorite quest BY FAR was the theives guild.  I am now the Grey Fox (king shit in the theives guild).  The toys you get in this mission are awesome.

I also won the dark brotherhood quest.  Good one.

Have you played the painting quest?  Very imaginative.  Same with the guy in the coma quest.

Really you should become king shit in every guild :P
Title: Re: Oblivion

I've played most of the side quests.  My favorite is by far the Dark Brotherhood quest where you have a bunch of people in a mansion and have to kill them all.  If you do it right the last two people will attack each other.  Right now my guy is the head of the fighter's guild, mage's guild, dark brotherhood, and champion of the arena.  I've done a couple quests for the thieve's guild but i was concentrating more on the main quest than that.  My guy's not much of a thief anyways.

The mansion one rocked!

The arena was by far the most difficult!!!  Now I beat on three Min Lords once a week for $$.  I own three houses plus my Grey Fox flat.  I have shitloads of cash.  I am independantly wealthy.  Nothing at all I can't buy.

Your turn Ober!

When you add mods to the game that add/enhance/fix a lot of whats either broken, annoying, or missing from the original game, it easily jumps to a rating of 20 out of 10. Theres no way I could go back to playing it unmodded, it would feel like it got lobotomized.

One of the best gets rid of the scaling issue, adds tons of new enemies and weapons, and actually adds challenge to the game instead of the original which feels like you could conquer the world at level 1. Plus the dozens of landscape editors that enhance and add to the scenery to actually make the forests and swamps feel like actual forest and swamps.

There are night elves and orcs

I had a really good orc fighter for awhile.  His name was Phil.

I started playing Shivering Isles but went back to the main Oblivion game and got lost. I just bought a new graphics card for my ageing system so I can now actually play the game at a decent resolution with lots of nice graphical goodies; the water is particularly nice now and some of the views are quite extraordinary, when your character isn't getting raped by bears, that is.

I like the sound of some of those mods - care to suggest some specifically and perhaps where to get them?

I tried making the 100 damage for 1 sec kill-spell but need a 'destruction' of 100 to use it. :(

Currently sporting home made daedric 'thew' armour (+8, 9 or 10 strength per item) so one, maybe two whacks with the daedric longsword, especially on the x6 sneaky backstab usually puts an end to most things or leaves them reeling and defenceless.

The only mod I use this time around is a 'feather ring' - I just can't stand the weight restriction system and running back and forth several times to the same area.

Major pet hate: kill the bad guys, break dozens of lockpicks on the most difficult of locks, throw open the chest and find - a tan plate.

If you do it so it just damages health you should only need a destruction of 50.

How about a "Tan Plate" mod?  It gets rid of all of the fucking usless shit in the whole game and replaces it with AT LEAST 25 pieces of gold.

Anyone?

So how does one create a spell to damage amgica?  Where what I need, etc??

Man, it is so much fun to let them get in close, reel back for their melee strike, and then send them flying across the room with a fire spell :P

First, you need to either be admitted to the Arcane University or you need a mod installed that gives you access to an altar of spellmaking.  Second, you need to be able to cast a spell (not from a scroll) that damages an attribute.  It doesn't matter which one.  Then, go to the altar and it's pretty self-explanatory.  There are two at the mage's guild (one in an out-building, and one in the arch-mage's quarters).  If you have the Knights of the Nine expansion, there's also one in the wizard's tower that is up by Bruma.

I did like the first half of the arena this morning.  It's funny watching them run stright at your and then fall down when you fireball them.  I think I left my gate twice so far :P

I will give it a shot.  Gotta find the alter thing.  Already in arcane.  Trying to finish the mission where you open the stariwell and I don't have any damage magica spells or scrolls.  Sucks!!  :)

I'm pretty sure if you're already into the Arcane U you an just go to the Archmage's quarters to fart around and no one'll say boo unless you steal something or are there for a long time.

To make the spells leave the lobby area and it is the one on the far left.  There is a speaking stand and benches right outside.

Sorry, I was out of town for a few days.  Don't have much time to write about all of my favorites, but here's a list that details some of the best out there and where to get them:

http://aelius28.googlepages.com/home (http://aelius28.googlepages.com/home)

Some of my favorites:
Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul
Expanded Hotkeys and Spell Delete
Deadly Reflex 3
Thieves Arsenal
Tamriel NPCs Revamped
Natural Environments
Unique Landscapes
Martigen's Monster Mod
Operation Optimization (greatly improves FPS)
Bluesteel's Landscape LOD NormalMap Fix
Qarl's Textures
Illumination Within Revived

And of course <selfless plug :D>, anything with PJ in front of the name like PJ's Spell Compendium, PJ's Lightning strikes before storms, and my favorite PJ's Disco spell:

If you are into alchamy then I suggest getting the harvesting ring mod.  Put the ring on and it toggles a flag that will automatically harvest everything near you.  Even works on horseback.

Some things I would like to see is more to do after you become head cheese of a guild.  For example as Arch-Mage I'd rebuild burma's guild hall and stuff.  Also I'd think you should be able to walk into a guild hall and boss them around if you are the leader of the guild.

I also wish enchanting items didn't suck absolute balls.

I couldn't find it when I went looking for mods.  However I lucked out that when I uninstalled oblivion I didn't get rid of the the extra files.

You remember where you enter the world after the intro quests?  There is a small dock there and on the dock will be a chest with the ring in side.  Putting the ring on acts as a toggle so you can put it on and then take it off.  If you want to turn off the harvesting you just put the ring back on.

How do you actually get good at alchemy?  I tagged that skill, but the only time I ever went up in it was when I just ate every component in my inventory
Title: Re: Oblivion
Post by: Mike on June 07, 2007, 10:26:36 AM
You need to get at least a Mortar & Pestle.  You then click on it in your inventory.  You'll see 4 slots to put ingredients.  After you choose the first one you can only add another ingredient that has a common effect.  After you've got two ingredients you click some button to make the potion.  Rinse and repeat.  I love that they don't remove the ingredient each time so you can quickly make a bunch of potions up.

I usually wait until I have a lot of ingredients and then I go find a vendor that'll buy the potions and then make all the potions I can up and then sell them.

I think it is one of the easier skills to get up, especially with that harvesting ring.

 Although, it'll be the weekend at least before I get a chance to check any of them out.

>>alchemy<<

What Mike said. It's been the quickest advancement for both characters I've played for any length of time and is a good game cash-cow. If you have one each of the mortar, alembic, retort and calcinator it improves the efficacy of created potions.

The ingredient vacuum cleaner looks interesting, I may have a look at that this weekend, too. :)

I have to get back to this game but my WoW addiction is taking up the spare gaming time. Currently i am about level 12 - not yet started main quest and gently bumbling around the countryside - I havent even yet joined any of the mages or fighters guilds - though I have the pre-quest thingy for the mages.

My advice is become King Shit of the Theives Guild.  This quest gives you seveal items that help you along in nearly everything you do from there on out.  Especially the grand item at the end of the Theives Guild quest.
Title: Re: Oblivion
Post by: Mike on June 13, 2007, 09:22:51 PM
I went through and became king shit of every guild and finished the MQ but I didn't like the character.  So now I'm starting over using a different approach.  I "murdered" an annoying wizard for damaging my luck so I ended up joining the Dark Brotherhood earlier then I had expected.  The good news is free armor.  I'm thinking of the the thieves guild real quick to the the cowl.  I had read that if you wear the cowl when finishing the quests for the DB that the alternate personality gets the infamy.

The cowl is THE SHIT.  Yes wear the cowl be nasty take it off and nobody knows you were a naughty character.  Alternate identity.

Post by: Mike on June 14, 2007, 12:40:47 AM
Too bad you can't put it on, have the guards attack, and then take it off to have them stop attacking.

Heh I had fun getting into the Thieves guild.  Guard saw me go in the house (the whore was right there so I couldn't waste time) and was waiting for me to come out so I decided to resist and ran to the guy to turn in the diary.  I then proceeded to kill the two guards but decided to reload instead of paying one grand to get rid of my bounty.

Actually if you can get away long enough so that the guards stop chasing you and THEN remove the hood you are totally cool again.  It seems to be a matter of what proximity to the guards (or whoever) that matters.  I have murdered guards galore, run into a convenient woodland for a while, yanked the hood off and walked right back into the city with no issues at all.  Neat.

Do you get infamy even if you do the murders without anyone else knowing?  I'll have to check when I get home but I don't think my character has any infamy right now.

If you have the cowl you have infamy :P (unless you cheated of course)

So what is your normal reaction when you get caught wearing the cowl by accident (i.e. you fast travel to a city forgetting you have it on)?  Do you kill the poor guard who thought he'd get a promotion or do you run?

Personally I've been having a lot of fun murdering with the cowl on.  I'm going to see how big of a bounty I can get :D
Title: Re: Oblivion

Usually I murder the guard.  If there are a bunch and I figure I am hosed, I turn on God mode.  Kill them for laughs, turn off GM, and go back to a save hopefully remembering to remove the silly thing next time.  It makes for a fun diversion.

Reflect Damage FTW :P  I can usally handle 4 guards beating on me.  Though if I have room I'll often times kite them.

The best is doing assassinations with it on.  I killed the female guard chick in lizard town inside the barracks.  Put the hood on, killed her, took off the hood, and by the time the guard got to the room he didn't know what was going on and I walked out :P
Title: Re: Oblivion

I thought of a pretty cool mod:  A graveyard that adds a headstone whenever you murder someone.  Have something like their name and date of murder.  That way I can go strolling down memory lane.  Of course with 90+ murders it will fill up kinda fast :P
