bike-hacking
« on: August 09, 2008, 07:18:58 PM »
So as some of you know, my bike got stolen a little while back.  Luckily, I did have a cheap road bike to use:

The problem is that it is a men's bike and therefore a little large for me.  Riding isn't a problem, but reaching the brakes were really obnoxious.  I never use the drops mostly because the bike has awkward twist-shifters.

So lately, I had been giving some thought to changing the handlebars to bullhorns.  Because I am poor, I chose today (actually it was pretty impromptu) to hack my bars and flip them to create the effect.  Came out pretty well, I think.  I have a franken-bike.

Wish it hadn't taken such a long time to cut the drops off though.

sweet.
Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Yeah I'm the unemployed biker!

Gotta say that I am a big fan of the bullhorn grips.  Mine has bullhorn, drops, and a stright part.  What is nice is there is a second set of break levers on the stright part.  I hardly ever use the drops as I hate getting that low.  As for the twist shift, it isn't that bad and probably one of the easier shift methods I've used.

I didn't get as much cycling in as I wanted last week.  Since I only have classes and they are later in the day (8:40am or noon depending on the day) it was hard to get myself out of bed to go for that ride.  Plus when the rides are over an hour it can be a daughting thing to get going.

Whoops  :o Could've sworn you were Mike when I posted.

To the real Mike: You have...both bullhorn and drops?  How does that work? :scratchhead:

Nicely.  I'll take a pic later.  Perhaps I'm getting the names confused somewhat :P  But having three different grip areas is nice.  Heck there are four if you count the curve point, but there really isn't a break there :P

Oh, I would've just called those drops.  It's pretty much what my bike looked like before I chopped.

Ah.  I was referring to the lower part that curves back in on itself the drops and the top part the horns.

You would think that would make sense, but I guess they call bullhorns exclusively as handlebars that flip up a little bit. :)

Well that would just be awkward if you didn't cut them too.
