Garage
« on: October 20, 2018, 08:21:13 AM »
I decided to reorganize our garage.  I purchased four roll around wire rack shelves from Sams at $90 each and a six RubberMade attachment strips.  I hung most of the strips at about 72".  I stored the rarely accessed gardening and yard tools behind the racks t help clean things up.  They will change positions with the seasons like the lawn mower and snow blower do.  I cut a couple of the 84" hanging strips to fit the wall and or stack here and there.  They make a number of useful hooks, shelves, and baskets to hang from them.  Neat product.

The racks gave me much needed space to better organize our brewing equipment and misc. garage stuffs.  It also gave me the much needed task of getting rid of a plenty of built up crap.  The brewing equipment is fairly bulky in that we brew dual 5 to 7 gallon batches simultaneously.  This makes up for the fact we can only find the time to brew every 2 months or so.

14 years ago I painted the garage floor and it is really starting to show the age and wear.  I considered refinishing it, installing garage flooring, etc. however not worrying about the floor so much when we brew is just too nice.  If it were all new and nice again we would have to worry about ruining it with heat, scratches, and drops.

Years ago I installed ceiling fans.  Amazing idea.  The things should come standard with all garages.  They make it nice all summer, dry it out in winter, add tons of light, and keep most of the bugs out.

I am considering adding a drop down stair case to the attic, another work table/bench/box, and additional lighting in the far front and rear.  Not sure yet.

Anyone else tackle this kind of thing?

I tried posting a video and photos but received an error "The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator.".  Sorry Benny.

Yeah, I got an email that the folder was full.  I just took the limit off so you should be good.  I was reading your post going 'this post is worthless without pics' but I get it now.  Try again!

I haven't done much beyond hanging some shelving in our garage.  One of these days the original fluorescent lights are going to give out and I will replace them with LEDs or maybe a fan.  Then again, I don't spend much time in the garage so we probably would just get some lights.  I'd be thrilled if the lights just fucking died and it gave me a reason to do the project.  I already have the new lights picked out.  We also thought about doing something with the floor but again, we don't spend much time in the garage and it's only going to wear off over time.

Hey Knuck, are you sure you got enough propane?

I was just going to use the same lights we have in our basement: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Commercial-Electric-24-Watt-Brushed-Nickel-Integrated-LED-Ceiling-Flushmount-2-Pack-JJU3011L-BN/302430663  Easy to install, throws plenty of light.

Thanks for the pics :)  I'm surprised you have the fans hanging so low.  Any reason for that?

Ben, Costco has a very similarly looking light on sale now for $15.99 - I got 4 the other day, installed it, but it didn't work with my dimmers so I ended up returning them. Also, what do you do once the LEDs stop working? Looks like you have to replace the entire light

Hey Knuck, are you sure you got enough propane?

When we brew...

One burner for heating water.  Consistently needed throughout the process.
Two burners for heating the wort, in that we brew two batches simultaneously.

Got another in the grill.

The light I noted and plan to install myself provides double the light output and the more the better in the garage, also the dispersal is better due to the design.  The lights you have picked out look nicer though and might be something I would use for the house interior.

The fans are high enough that I have to really stretch to touch them but low enough to feel.  I didn't want them in the way but low enough to annoy insects.  It keeps them out of the garage for the most part.  Also makes the light kits and fan blades serviceable/cleanable without a ladder.

Jake.  I have yet to see an LED light fail.  Have you?  Dimming with LEDs is a pain.  They actually make dimmer switches designed for modern lighting.  I need to get those installed throughout our house.

@Jake, yes, you have to replace the light if it fails but the rated life is so long on them that I'm not really concerned about it.  The ones at costco seem similar but not exactly the same.  And as Knuck said, getting them to work on a dimmer is not as easy.  I know they make dimmers specific for LEDs.  I have 6 of the lights that I linked to in my basement and I thought I was wiring 2 of them up before I realized that they REALLY didn't want to work with the dimmer that I had.  So I just took the dimmer out and they worked fine.  Not that we NEEDED a dimmer down there in the current configuration but it was nice.

@knuck - thanks for the explanation.  Your setup makes a ton of sense.  You obviously use your garage for a lot of stuff.  Keep in mind that I don't really do any maintenance work on my cars and I keep most of the yard stuff in the shed in the backyard.  And you are right that more light in the garage is key and that's a good reason to consider an alternative.  The lights I got are definitely probably made more for interior stuff but I figured with the ceiling height I have in the garage and the amount of light that they throw that it might be enough.  Then again, I'm still waiting for the existing lights to die.  And the only time I really hate them is in the winter when they don't want to come on very well when it gets super cold.

Yup.  No shed here.  Thus gotta keep the garage under control.
