Prefetch...
« on: April 17, 2009, 12:48:36 PM »
Hey any of you software gods know if this tip actually works for all applications?  Also how does it work?

I had never heard of it.

The video is pointless. If you open an application then open it up again right after it's going to be faster because of hard disk cache hits.

That said, if you add the prefetch flag the executable will be cached at boot time, which means it will load faster as long as it hasn't been evicted from memory.

Probably easier to just buy a mac though :p

Boot up programs?  Since when do you boot a program?  You may load a program but you don't boot it.

That kid is an idiot.  Changing the target on a shortcut only passes things to a program, not to Windows (as far as I know).  The only reason that program started faster is because of what Perspective said.

Make sure you read the second update comments.

And honestly, your computer is faster than mine and I'm never sitting there "waiting" for more than 1 or 2 seconds for a program to load up.

The exectutable is cached at OS boot time.

Wouldn't it be cached after the OS has loaded which is long long after the boot loader has been executed ;)

Yeah, I don't mean by the boot loader, just part of the OS boot as a whole. For windows that means a whole pile of crap aside from OS loading including walking the dog and taking the trash out.

I wish it took my trash out.  Wonder if there is a add-on to replace walking the dog with cleaning the litter box...
