RAM speed
« on: January 31, 2007, 01:14:31 PM »
I'm trying to hold off on building a new home PC so I'm thinking of simply upgrading the RAM on my current PC which should give me another year or so before building a new one. I've currently got 2x512 chips of PC-3200 DDR in there and I'm thinking of getting another 2x512 set. My board can go with one step higher in speed but if I remember right the RAM will run at the slowest chip speed so I really don't get any benefit out of buying the faster RAM.

Am I remember correctly or should I buy the slightly faster RAM for the small performance it would get me?

Lowest speed rules.  Don't buy the faster stuff.

Ober and I seemed to have determined that CAS latency seems to be paramount.  Also we have bumped to 2G from one.  That is 4 x 512.

What think Ober?

Thanks, I've found the same RAM available from newegg.com for a good price so I'm going to get that. Good think I kept the receipts for the PC that last time I built it.

This should last me another few months until I build my next PC to last a few years.
And I've got my work laptop that isn't a slouch either.
