MS Vista
« on: August 02, 2005, 04:32:34 PM »
Its pretty increadible to see how much of the new functionality MS is dropping just to meet a "only a year or so late" deadline. No new file system (Windows FS), no super awsome command line tools that they bragged about (Monad), and most noteworthy: Its not based on the .NET framework!

A good sarcastic summary here: I'm So Excited by Microsoft Vista. Not.

Looks to me like they just made it prettier (and not by much).

...and there's already rumors about a possible lawsuit from another redmond-based company named vista.

I wish something like this could work...

With all the features they keep cutting out, how is this really any different from WindowsXP? I think if there was ever a good time for Unix/Linux to gain desktop market percentage, it's going to be in the next year with what I would consider a disappointing effort from M$. Sort of like WindowsME?

it doesn't matter how good *nix is, unless it gains the support of schools, the mass-market, and "all I know is how to turn it on and use AIM" people, it won't get anywhere near mainstream.  the problems are that MS already has this, and the things that make it bad in your eyes aren't even going to be noticed by the average computer user.

I believe they answered these rumors by saying they were "Microsoft Vista" and never just "Vista". I'd be annoyed if there was a copyright battle over one ambiguous word.

yeah, I think that was what MS was going to say if the other company ever brought them to court... which probably won't happen because it (should be) a pretty unwinnable case for them...

Seems like the first viruses (proof of concept!) have been devised for the 'new' (or not) command shell:

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?.
